As a general rule, House tried very hard to ignore his birthday, and this year was no exception. Actually, he was even less inclined to celebrate considering that he was in a country that so far he hated along with most of the people in it. To be fair, it wasn't as if he'd liked the people in New Jersey either, but at least there were a handful that he tolerated. There were probably people to tolerate here, he just hadn't met them yet.

He also hadn't quite mastered the art of ordering delivery here. Chinese food he had managed (though it really wasn't the same). Prostitutes, that was something to be more cautious about. But it was his birthday, so he decided to window shop. Worst case, he'd get plastered and take a cab home, which also seemed like a reasonable way to spend the evening.

Thus, he was in a hotel bar. Drinking whiskey and water, and eating a bowl of pistachios. Looking very much alone, and pretty unapproachable, except for the sort of approaching he was hoping for. His cane was leaning against the bar by his stool, and when some asshole kicked it over he was almost relieved because one of the problems with this country was that there weren't enough assholes. Everyone was so damned polite.

But he still grumbled as he leaned over to grab it, and nearly fell off the stool in the process.

Fin had approached from the other side, though his intention was to get a drink, not speak to the older man. However, as he watched him reach, Fin couldn't help but frown slightly in concern.

"Need a hand?" he offered. "This floor isn't one you want to land on, unless you enjoy sticky trousers."

The bartender shot him a look, and Fin grinned. "Not that I object to sticky trousers."

Fin cocked his head, puzzled, but only for a moment.

Confusion gave way to amusement, and he chuckled as he accepted his drink from the barman and took a fresh coaster.

"No?" he asked. He hadn't been looking to pull, and still wasn't really, but he was always up for a bit of fun. Pretending to be a hooker would certainly keep him entertained for a bit. Though the moment a fan wandered by and begged a selfie off him, the game would be over, he was sure.

"Am I not pretty enough? Or are you worried I'd be too expensive?" he asked, all nymph-like sweetness as he leaned casually against the bar.

"Well, you're not wrong. I have been known to dabble in all sorts of lovely pills and things, but washed up model? I'm flattered, but I don't have the height for it," Fin pointed out, smiling as he sipped his drink.

Fin snorted at that, about to say something more, then pausing as a young man approached.

Ah, game over then. Pity.

"Sorry, I, uh- I know you're chatting, but could I get a photo?" the young man asked, clearly aiming for flirty, but just missing due to nerves.

"Yeah, of course," Fin smiled, putting his drink down and moving so the man could get closer and snap the shot. Fin was all smiles, nodding and thanking him as the man talked about going to see Reap, and how much he'd enjoyed Fin as the killer in the BBC adaptation of The Robber Bridegroom.

Once the young man was gone, Fin returned his attention to the man at the bar. "Not a former model, nor a hooker- though I suppose I do get paid to role play," he said thoughtfully, picking his drink back up. "Also, nice to know I can pull off heroin thin without a diet. I was worried I might have to survive on handfuls of almonds for that..."

Hannibal had been attending a small conference which had been held at the hotel. After the conference, he'd joined a few colleagues in the hotel bar, where they had been discussing the theories presented and shared insights and new projects.

It had been an interesting evening. But instead of going home, Hannibal decided to stick around. Someone had rubbed him the wrong way, had been rude to him. So he decided to keep an eye on him for a little while longer.

He approached the bar when a man nearly fell off his stool. Hannibal grabbed him with a firm hand, before noticing that he wasn't going to fall after all. "I do apologize," he said. "I thought you were going to fall over." And with that he let go of the man's arm, to grab his cane instead.

Hannibal had a rather keen eye himself when it came to first meetings (he was currently standing in front of an American with a psychosomatic limp and an addiction to pain medication), but he rarely flaunted those skills in front of strangers. He referred using those skills for different purposes.

"Very impressive," he nodded. "American? You did not attendance conference, did you?"

"It wasn't that bad," Hannibal assured with a pleasant smile. "Psychological effects after neurological trauma. It had some practical value. I imagine that matters. You're a medic are you not?"

This particular hotel wasn't one of the best places to find a client, but every now and then Angelique had some success here. As an extra bonus in its favor, she patronised it infrequently enough that the staff had not yet caught on to what she was doing. One did have to be careful in that regard. She wore a modest pencil skirt and a ruffled blouse with a high neck and no sleeves, generally presenting as more professional than prostitute.

As she approached the bar, she noticed some careless lout knock over the walking stick of a slightly older man, and tsk'ed at the clumsy person's retreating back. Angelique reached to catch the cane up, and righted it again. "Some people have simply no consideration for others," she said disapprovingly.

"Goodness, no," Angelique laughed, taking a seat at the bar next to him. "I must have just missed them. Though, I suppose I am a kind of therapist. For broken hearts only," she confided with a sly little smile in his direction. Then she ordered from the bartender a glass of white wine from almost the exact middle of the wine list's price range.

Boyish, indeed. No hips to speak of at all, slender arms and legs, her mouth just a little too wide and her face too angular. Perhaps the hint of a chest, but nothing to stare at. She perched on the stool beside the real doctor, but sat with her knees together and did not cross them as women often did.

Angelique turned with interest to the man, giving the bartender only a short smile when her wine was brought. "Is that so? Though... psychologists aren't real doctors? All those years at school for nothing, how sad," she commented, her tiny smile still playing at her lips.

Vanessa grabbed the man's arm to help stop his fall, and smiled at him kindly. "Let me." She picked up his cane and handed it over. "Here."

In slacks and a light purple blouse, with her hair pulled back in a chignon, she looked very much like a woman who had been at work. The only thing that detracted from the image she presented was the pendant she wore, a diamond carved into a circle, with runes on the outside, and a small red stone in its centre - although it was mostly hidden behind her blouse.

Vanessa could not help herself; the set-up was too perfect. She looked at him with one of her most penetrative stares, and went for the typical psychologist's move. "Are you?" Throwing the question back at one's patient.

"I get the respect I deserve from the people who deserve mine," Vanessa remarked, unphased by his words, and turned her attention to the bartender when he stopped beside her. She ordered a glass of red wine, then turned back to the actual doctor once she had it in hand. "Do you hold everyone at bay because you're afraid they'll disappoint you, or you'll disappoint them?"
