Ever since Halloween, Vanessa had been spending more time than usual in Prometheus's shop. She usually only opened it up a few hours during the weekend, for anyone to wander into, but these days she headed there straight from work. She had been making an inventory of the books and items inside it, since she had been unable to find one. Of course, many of the items were mysterious to her, so the making of that list was a long and arduous process, given how much research she sometimes had to do.

But she hoped that it would pay off, in the end. That she might be able to find something there to stand in the place of the talisman she had broken on Halloween, wielding the words of Verbis Diablo to destroy the creature that had been after Felix. She had written Prometheus, telling him the gist of what had happened (Felix's story was, after all, his own, and she did not even mention him by name) and asking whether he could think of anything else that might afford her the same protection the amulet had. But mail was a slow thing, and she had received no answer for now.

Nothing had happened yet, but without protection, something would, eventually. Vanessa could almost feel her demons slithering ever so much closer to her.

Right then, she was carefully leafing through an old tome full of esoteric drawings, trying to estimate its value - the sort of value that had nothing to do with pounds. She looked a little less together than usual, wisps of hair escaping her chignon, and the jacket of her pants suit folded on the back of a nearby chair. When the door opened, she looked up from the book she was perusing at the counter, wondering who the shop had drawn in this time.

Em had only been in the shop once before, but as she passed it on her way to the Tube station and home, she had an impulse to stop in. What she remembered of it felt a lot like the jumble of her mind since Halloween, and who knew what patterns it might turn up.

She did not expect to see Vanessa Ives behind the counter, but there she was, and as though she was supposed to be there. Em dipped her head in a silent hello, but let her gaze and path cover more of the store rather than directly approach the other woman. Vision memories pressed at her mind's eye, and focusing on the collection of items in the shop helped keep her attention in the here and now.

"I could say the same thing, Miss Ives." Em pulled her gaze from one of the paintings – raven black teasing at her peripheral vision - and offered Vanessa a small smile.

"I've met, but don't really know him." So Em had had no reason to know he was away. "You fit it, though, I think. Even if you don't keep it open as much as he might."

Not sure she could articulate the connections she intuitively responded to, Em shrugged. "It's not a bad thing. It's obviously not your space, but you don't... feel jarring here."

"Nothing particular, just where the path led me today." Em didn't really have a reason beyond that, but if anyone would understand, it would be Miss Ives. "I'm glad it did. It's been too long, and I've been bad about keeping in touch with," the world, "people."

Em had meant more in general, but Miss Ives jumping so quickly to Halloween only emphasized how true it had been since then too, with all the reminders of why.

"You too?" and then more confidently, "You lost something important."

"If it's not any trouble." Em didn't want to pry. They didn't have that kind of acquaintance, and the desire for privacy was something Em could understand. But it wasn't the first time Halloween in London had been difficult for them.

Em considered, looking over the various options, and settled on a pu-erh that seemed to fit the moment, the space, her mood, or all of the above, she couldn't really say.

"Tea leaves have never shown me anything I couldn't see in clouds or birds. Or flames. Not like the tarot."

"I did wonder." That was partially why Em had commented on the possibility at all.

"If they were, the two of us doing something as simple as sharing tea could be particularly portentous. I don't know about you, but I prefer choosing when I See something." Especially lately, when her mind still felt slippery at the slightest trigger.

That prompted a nod. "There are reasons I'm not looking too closely at Prometheus' paintings today." They shown Em things before, and after Halloween she didn't want to risk it. Not looking was the only way she could be sure not to see something.

"That I've never worked out," Em admitted. "Although I know how lucky I am to need some kind of image to trigger my precognition."

"Not plagued." Em couldn't think of her mutation that way. "Gift, far more than curse, and part of me either way." She shrugged. "I wouldn't be... me without them."

"My grandmother used to say I couldn't change things, only ride the wave. She was talking about what I saw in the cards, but it's just as true for having precognition at all." It wasn't an approach that worked for most people, probably not for Miss Ives for whom control seemed so important, but Em had had a lifetime to get used to it.

"But I haven't asked, how... how are the waves for you lately?"

Em nodded almost sadly. "If I see anything that might help, I'll let you know."

Then, because it had been some time since they talked, "I know you have your deck, and no need for another that might not speak to you as well, but I've one coming out the end of February."

"I'll be sure to send you one." Em didn't have many friends who'd appreciate the tarot as much as Vanessa could. "And Kendall is talking about a gallery show of some of the originals once the deck is released, but I don't know whether that'll work out or not."

"They own the Kendall Gallery, where I had my first show," Em explained. She'd first met Miss Ives at that show, she remembered.

"I never would've been asked to design a deck, if not for them, or gotten most of my commissions. I really would be just a fortune teller, if not for their encouragement."

"That's all I've ever been. At least to me." She didn't see that as a contradiction of what she'd said before, only an acknowledgement of her self-identity. And maybe her flaws.

"So I've been told," she said, joining Miss Ives for the tea. "The future's been the one constant to my life, though, as ironic as that may be."

"The present has its own challenges, especially when you see more of it than most. But there are good things too?" she asked, hoping there was something that eased the burdens Miss Ives carried and that Em hadn't looked too deeply into.

"A quiet cup of tea isn't a bad start, or good company." Em hoped she could be the latter, but at least they had the former.

"Then let's hope we both have that kind of good luck." Em lifted her tea, dipping her head in a short nod toward Miss Ives. "More often than not."
