Strange things had been happening in London lately. ...Actually, strange didn't really cover it. Sinister, exceptional, insane, dangerous- Those were all probably better descriptors. What was about to unfold this weekend, however, was something else entirely. A few years ago dozens of Londoners had found themselves transported to a mystery house on Halloween.  That had been a terrifying experience for most, but this- This was terrifying in a very different way.

During the last week of September, handfuls of random Londoners had woken to find themselves in a boarding school known as The Dirgelwch School For Exceptional Youths. Some awoke in the suites and small on ground housing intended for staff, finding themselves unchanged, but with a feeling that this was where they belonged. ...What they were meant to be doing. They knew what subject they taught, they knew their schedules- And though something in the back of their brains nagged at them, letting them know something had changed, they simply couldn't figure out what it was.

Others awoke in dorms, finding themselves having just crossed into adulthood, at the beginning of their last year and itching to graduate. Again, they woke knowing something had changed, but what that thing was felt slightly out of reach. So they went to class, they reconnected with friends after what seemed like a long summer apart. Life went on, as it does, and though it all seemed terribly innocent, there was drama and tension bubbling up inside them all.

(Gathering post! You can have your pup wake up as a teacher or a student. Feel free to invent NPC's, and to assume that even in this strange little AU that magic, vampires, and all those other lovelies are very real. How much your pup has forgotten or remembered about their life prior to this plot is 100% up to you. If you want them to wake up absolutely confused by this whole situation, that's fine (though i hope a few people play along, I think that'll be fun). The boarding school is closed off to the rest of the world (Picture large metal gates and watchful groundskeepers), and the school itself is a lovely old brick fortress of a building, out in the middle of the countryside. Questions or concerns? Pop into the slack! This post will be open for several weeks, but in game will only last a weekend. Have fun! Tag in, check in often!)

Newt sat on a bench in the park across from the building that housed the small flat that the Ministry had provided for him. He held his suitcase on his lap, still wary about having it out of his sight for even a moment. This was a step for him, being out in the world at all. Since he had arrived here a few weeks ago from 1927, everything was simply too much. Too much noise, too much crowd, too much that was unrecognizable, unexplainable...

Sometimes he'd felt as if the world was not all that welcoming to him at the best of times, and now he felt like even more of an outsider. He was an alien here. And not only this, but the shock of going to the Ministry for help and discovering that everyone knew who he was. There was a portrait of him there. A first edition of his book under glass.

He watched a squirrel scurry up a tree. Once safely on a branch, it paused and looked over at him. He offered a little wave.

The latch on his suitcase popped open.

"Quiet down, Dougal," he said gently as he closed the clasp again. "I am not letting you out, not here. If you thought New York was a different world, you've no idea what you might encounter in this place."

The latch popped open again, almost violently this time, and Newt practically flattened himself against the case to make sure it stayed closed, then glanced up and around him frantically, as if afraid he might be caught doing something bad.

It was the best time of year. The air was becoming crisp and it was in fashion to break out the jumpers and boots. Pippa had a long Aran sweater with chunk, fat cables that came down over her bum. To go with the lovely cream colour she had chosen brown leggings and finished the look off with knee high boots of a slightly lighter brown. She had her hair up in a messy bun.But the crowning accessory was the Starbucks cup that held the most precious of things.

Pumpkin Spice Latte.

She had her drink in one hand and her mobile in the other as she scrolled through Pintrest, looking, still, at decor ideas. Fin's remodel had given her ideas for her own flat. Not a full remodel, no, but it wouldn't hurt to update a few things. Maybe get a little crafty and build some shelves.

And then Pip stopped on the sidewalk near a tube stop and reflected on herself.

Oh, God...I'm so basic she thought. It was just a moment of self doubt. But then she sipped her drink and realized she didn't give a fuck what anyone thought of how she chose to enjoy autumn. Jumpers were good and PSL was delicious. And if anyone had anything to say about it she'd turn them into a toad. That thought made her smile. Yes, she was sure she could manage turning someone into a toad.

"I'm so terribly sorry," said a woman who had to be seventy or more. "Is this the train to Piccadilly?"

Pippa had no idea so she called up the map on her phone and helped the woman find her way. It was a small act of kindness that left her smiling even as the woman descended the stairs. All thoughts of turning people into toads vanished and just a tiny bit of magic escaped her control, perfuming the air with pumpkin spice and making hearts lighter as they passed.

(Any tube stop, find Pippa smiling fondly. She's in a good mood and her magic makes that a tiny bit contagious. Open forever)

So far his leads and contacts hadn't gotten him any closer to finding Hotch, but Spencer wasn't ready to give up just yet. ...Besides, London was, honestly, a nice change of pace. He missed work, missed his team, but while none of his contacts had gotten him closer to Hotch, one had gotten him work as a criminal psychologist consultant for Scotland yard. The work wasn't steady, but it was something. That, paired with the generosity of a friend who had offered him his flat while he was teaching abroad meant money wasn't as tight as it could have been. For now, he could make this work.

He'd never been a big spender anyway, and so today, with no work on his plate, Spencer was at the library. Settled into a corner near the back, he sat with a stack of books on his left and another on his lap, reading at a slightly slower pace than he might when reading for a case. Though it was still remarkably quick. Spencer devoured text the way a starving man might devour a three course meal, savouring only the best bits and filling himself up swiftly with the rest in an attempt to fight off pangs of hunger.

London was a magic epicenter of sorts. Between doors to The Otherside, dormant and active portals, and an active wizarding community, it was a hub of energy, more so now than it had been for quite some time. The city was experiencing a magical renaissance of sorts- Which sounded lovely and made it a prime place to be for those exploring and studying magical energies, but wasn't so wonderful for London's more 'normal' sorts.

Magic didn't care if you were a dark lord or a banker, if it liked you, it liked you- And it was impossible to guess who it would like.

Today magic energy was at an all time high. Another blip in the usually somewhat steady stream of power that flowed through the streets. As a result, odd things were afoot- From mischievous inconveniences, to darker disruptions. Unlike the portals, these bothers were a touch more subtle, creeping up unseen on the unsuspecting.

Last time around the magic had seemed lighthearted and playful- And some of it still was, but... There was an intensity to some of it this time, harking back to the troubles that seemed to roll around every Halloween now. Something wicked was caught in the current, and while it wasn't out to harm everyone, it did seem keen to target a few.

(OTA. Just like the last time, the magic can affect your pup however you see fit. Unlike last time, however, some of the magic has taken a darker turn. It doesn't have to do something wicked to your pup, of course, but the option is there now. This post will be open from 7/18-7/28 or longer if needed. Tag in, tag others, and check back often.)

The Solstice was upon them. When the sun went down the magic began to swell, the veil between this world and the Other Side thin as vapor. Mortals could sense it, even, though they may not have a name for it. They gathered together, not realizing the animal instinct of safety in numbers.

But all around the city, from the dark parts, fae began to come together as well. Unseelie filled the city- boggarts and Red Caps and things unseen for many a year with bright eyes and sharp teeth. But they were tricksy, dangerous and malicious but no worse than they ever were. The real threat, the ever present danger this year, were the Milesian that crawled out of the sewers and tube tunnels to prowl they city. They were hunting tonight. They had eyes black and soulless, eyes too wide for their white, gaunt faces. Larger than their eyes were their mouth. The smile of needle fangs glinted in the street lights. Long arms ending with spidery, spindly fingers reached and clawed at passers by from the shadows.

There was a war in the city tonight and the nature of the foe, the Milesian, meant no bound mortal needed to be near any battle. Death would come to one or the other if a killing blow came down.

But there was hope. Seelie fae prowled the city as well, fighting for Light and Air. Even the Queen had seen fit to step through with her sword and shield. Such was the threat to the Fae way of life that the Milesian presented.

The longest day of the year dawned but the sunlight did nothing to frighten off the dark forces. The longest day of the year simply meant the things that went bump in the night were attacking in the light.

(Tag in, tag around! Open all week so check back. Have fun with your adventures. If you don't want any Milesian, there are plenty of Unseelie, too. Day or night, whichever works for you.)

The weather this weekend wasn't worth getting excited over, but it was fair enough to justify some time out and about. Stores were packed with new stock, cafes were brimming with life, and as always, London herself was buzzing with activity.

In South London Pop Brixton was celebrating its second birthday, offering up DJs and live performances, along side plenty of food and drink vendors. Though if your mouth's watering and that's a tube trip too far, you could always head on over to Westfield Shepherd's Bush, where you'd find a fun food truck festival. For those looking to fill up with girl power rather than pudding, you could always head over to the Powerpuff Girls pop up shop. As always, there was no shortage of things to do this weekend.

The news was still packed with election chatter, and talk of the concert for Manchester, but if you took a peek at twitter, you might find a little conspiracy brewing all about one Finlay Flynn- Who's management was currently fighting rumors about his disappearance. Little theories kept popping up, showing how his twitter feed seemed slightly off, or how filming for his BBC 3 show had been suspiciously delayed. There were youtube videos discussing it, threads on various online forums, all chattering about how the actor who was so often spotted on the tube or in pubs was suddenly absent. A silly little bit of internet crazy for most- But an unsettling reminder of his absence to those in the know.

Still, London stopped for nobody, and the city was in full bloom, just as it was every weekend.

Pippa worked when she saw fit. Not every case that came to her was one she took. Sometimes she needed the money so she'd take a jilted lover or a runaway teen, but mostly she kept her time free for cases that interested her. This week she'd gotten a juicy case. Vampires abducting young men and women. Of course anything with vampires intrigued her. She'd set about tracking down the nest that was central to the location of the abductions.

She also had her contacts. She'd touched base with a few of them to pump them for information. Something in the back of her mind told her she should contact Eric. He'd be of use. And she needed to use every resource available.

She hadn't made contact with him, though. She'd simply turned up at the Blood Diamond in a slinky amethyst dress and high heels, her hair done up so her neck was at its most tempting. She'd turned away a few offers. The vamps had been lovely, but not who she was trolling for. She spent most of the night at the bar, her fae blood singing to the creatures around her.

As the night dragged on she became disheartened she wasn't going to make contact. She left her wine on the bar and stepped outside for a cigarette. She pulled her black velvet shawl around her shoulders, the skin tight dress doing nothing to keep her warm on this chill spring night. Out here in the dark she let her magic waft off her gently, perfuming the air like bait. Pip took a drag and kept a watchful eye out for the vampires that met her description of the brood she was looking for. As the night dragged on past midnight she started to lose hope.

She pulled out anothe rcigarette, but this time she fumbled her lighter and it clattered to the ground.

"Bollocks," she sighed, her sweet perfume all around her like night blooming jasmine and wisteria.

She bent gracefully in her cocktail dress to pick it up and saw the shoes of a person before her.

"Clumsy me," she said lightly. Then she looked up to meet those eyes. "Oh, hello."

Winter's potion was, for the most part, a reliable thing these days. He took it first thing in the morning, topped up around noon, and had a drip or two more before midnight if he wasn't headed home yet. Without those extra drops, however, it usually wore off just after midnight- About fifteen minutes after, to be more precise. So, when it hadn't worn off after midnight two days ago, Winter had been, understandably, concerned. Enough so that he'd not taken it since.

Two days, no potion, and he was still... Mortal size. He could make himself shrink, force himself small. All his powers seemed fine and his wings were as sharp and sure as ever, he just... Didn't seem to be pixie sized anymore. And while a younger Winter would have thought that was great, adult Winter had concerns. This just wasn't normal. ...Something inside him was changing. He was changing.

...He couldn't help but worry he was becoming that vision of himself he'd seen in his reflection. The tall and lean creature, with wild eyes and sharp bones. He knew he needed to tell someone, that doing nothing definitely wasn't a solution- He just wasn't sure who to go to anymore. Everyone seemed to have their own problems at the moment, and Winter didn't want to add his own to anyone's pile.

Sitting outside Starbucks, sipping a unicorn inspired drink that was too sweet even for the pixie, Winter looked very grown up and painfully normal in his black jumper and fitted jeans. His wild hair had curled itself into a fairly tame looking style, and was currently a very drab shade of ginger and brown. Taking another sip of his drink, he wrinkled his nose and pushed the cup away- Only to pull it back towards him a few moments later for another sip.

"Gross," he muttered, nose wrinkling again, as though he'd forgotten just how bad it was- Or, maybe, convinced himself to give it just one more go.

The press weren't talking about it, but there were whispers on Twitter- Chatter about strange events, odd happenings. Little pockets of London where seemingly impossible things were happening. ...Except no one seemed to be able to get photos of these 'strange occurrences', and as we all know, if there are no pictures, it didn't happen.

A girl near the Thames had tweeted about seeing what looked like tiny creatures dancing across the surface of the water. A man on the underground had reported his bag briefly floating a foot off the ground. A boy in Topshop had tweeted about his own reflection trying to have a chat with him.

Those with magic in them could feel it. Little bubbles of playful power popping up all over the city, then vanishing again. Like a pot of water that never quite reached a boil. It was a gentle kind of magic though. Soft and playful- Not from the other side or any other part of the world, but right here in London. It was old and forgotten, and very keen to play with everyone- Magic and non-magic alike.

(Open all through next week and next weekend. Have the magic effect your character however you like, but keep in mind that this magic, whatever it is, is very pure and playful. It wouldn't cause harm- Though maybe inconvenience.)

After weeks of agonizing about whether she was or wasn't pregnant with Akeem's baby, the relief of a definitive negative had done wonders for her. No longer was her skin stangely grey, no launger was she angular and gaunt.

Today Pippa was the picture of heath. Radiant with life and good cheer. She was dressed for shopping, a trim cut houndstooth single breasted coat with the hem of her red blouse peeking out from beneath the edge of the coat. Red leather gloves, black skin-tight leggings, and knee high black leather boots completed her look. Her hair was pinned up on each side and the luxurious weight of it tumbled down over her shoulders.

She paused as she exited Harrod's to check her phone. She had a few other places she simply must go, but for the most part she was simply shopping and finding joy in it. It had ben too long since she'd been able to empty her head and enjoy the banal.

"Oooh, I have enough stars for a free Grande. Starbucks next, it seems..."

She looked up and around, smiling at everyone around her. She desperately wanted to scream "I'M NOT PREGNANT!" to everyone, but she refrained. A smile would do.

He'd come into the new year clean, and intended to do his best to stay that way. More importantly, he was back on his medication and back to eating regular meals- Not that it seemed to be helping much. Some damage couldn't be undone easily though, and Danny was still painfully underweight. Worse still, he was a bit under the weather, and couldn't get in to see his doctor until the end of the month.

It was just a bug, that's what he kept telling himself- And only himself. He didn't want to worry Hex with this, the other man had already gone through so much because of him. Had put up with so much...

He'd pushed himself through a job interview that morning, and was supposed to stop off for groceries next, but a dizzy spell had nearly left him flat on the pavement. So instead he'd wandered into a small cafe, ordering a cup of tea and a sandwich before settling into the last booth in the corner. His hand trembled every time he lifted his mug, and he knew he looked a little pale.

"It's fine," he whispered to himself. "You're fine. It's fine..."

Taking a calming breath, he lifted his cup again, his hand shaking so hard this time that it fell from his fingers. It bounced off the table, rolling a little before smashing on the floor, coating the shoes of a person walking past.

"Sorry- Shit, I'm so sorry," he said, reaching for some napkins as he spoke.

He'd been on set most of the day, working on something that wouldn't air for several more months. It was nice to be working though, his magic and the potion Faizel had crafted for him making his vision passable and eyes clear looking. There were a lot of questions, of course, and quite a bit of gossip too- However, Fin had learned his lesson, and rather than make up lies about how he'd healed, he simply told the press and those who asked that it was personal, and that he didn't wish to dwell on it.

The aftermath of his party a few days ago still had him in a bad place though, and for all he should have been pleased to be working again, smiles were hard to come by.

Presently he was sitting outside the BBC office, perched on the steps and smoking. He was staring at his phone, aware he ought to call an uber- But struggling to focus enough to actually do so. He just felt so worn down, emotionally and physically, and he'd spent all the energy he'd had to push through it all on set. There was simply none left to aid him now.

It wasn't like him to be so down though, to let the problems of the past and present eat away at him so- And he told himself it was just a side effect of the season, rather than admit that, perhaps, the things he'd buried, the feelings he'd ignored, were just finally making their way to the surface.

Fin and Will had rented out the entirety of the theatre where Fin had gotten his big break, then brought in staff to deck the pace out in holiday cheer. The centrepiece was a grand looking tree that stood centre stage, with a DJ set up to the left, and Santa to the right, who was taking photos and handing out this year's goodie bags. Some of the seating had been removed to make room for dancing and food, but the balcony remained as it always was, for people to rest and get a good view of the celebrations below.

No expense had been spared, but it was, overall, a causal affair. Those who weren't competing in the ugly jumper contest were asked to dress tidy, but comfortably, so they could enjoy the festivities of the evening. From the music and food, to the affordable bar and little area set up to fill out cards and make donations for the local children's hospital.

Invites had been sent to their friends and loved ones, and inside each invite they'd tucked a few more so their friends could invite their friends also.

All and all, it was set to be a wonderful night.

It was his birthday. ...Not the exact date, but the time when things had aligned in a way that had made the pixie what he was. He was Winter, and so today was his day. Sure, he shared it with plenty of others, but that didn't make it any less his.

He'd never really celebrated it though, not since he'd been terribly small. ...Smaller than usual, that is. However, this year felt like the year, this was the right time, he could feel it in his bones. He needed to celebrate, and to throw the biggest party any pixie had ever thrown. From the tree-house and through the park, there were decorations no one could explain, and music coming from a band that always seemed to be 'just a bit that way' or 'just a ways over there', impossible to find, and yet somehow everywhere..

And then there were the special guests, his friends from back home, each had been sent an invite, along with just enough potion to help them pass for mortal for the day. Though how well they passed seem to vary. Many arrived in the clothes they always wore, dresses woven from petals, shirts made of leaves... Magic was everywhere, coaxing life from sleeping trees and leaving the weather in a tizzy, from warm, to snowy, then back again. It was an only barley controlled bit of chaos, but Winter didn't mind, he was surrounded by friends and had no reason to do anything but smile.

It had been a while since he'd attended a class, but Winter was still dancing in his free time. In fact, today he was dancing, rather than playing music, in the park. He had his speaker nearby, playing soft, classical music from his playlist, and a bucket nearby to collect tips as he danced.

Ballet came naturally to the pixie, and he moved with ease, pushing up on his toes and extending his leg as he twirled. He was so into it that he didn't notice the little bit of magic creeping out from, coating one of the nearby trees in frost.

The people who stopped to watch simply assumed it was part of the act though, and people smiled brightly as they snapped photos of the fair skinned boy and the shimmering, frost coated tree behind him. Not that Winter was paying any of them much mind, even as they started to drop change in his bucket. No, it wasn't until the song ended and he spotted a familiar face in the crowd that Winter seemed aware of the world around him. Looking a touch pleased with himself, he rocked back on his heels and used his magic to coax a little more cash from the pockets of his fans.

Though the smiles and the smugness weren't quite as genuine as usual. Winter was doing his best to seem his usual self- But the truth was he'd been a bit on edge since Halloween and his encounter with Crowley. He was wary of everyone now he knew how quickly a friend could turn on him.

"It would just be for a month, two at most. I haven't said yes yet, but- I think I should. I mean, how often am I going to get offers like this, Pip?"

He'd meant to tell Pippa his plan to travel to America over lunch, but things had been going so well, and they'd been having such a nice time of it. He just hadn't wanted to spoil it, and so they were lingering on the pavement, having been about to call for an uber when Fin had blurted out the fact that he'd been offered a small role in a major motion picture.

"A month or two? Fin, that's ridiculous! You can't. America is dangerous. And you know how it is right now with the election and all the shootings. No. No, I'm putting my foot down on this. you can't go," she said. Of course it was fueled by deep concern- she was so protective of Fin- but she dug her heels in on this and it didn't come off as worry, it just came off as bossy.

"I wasn't asking permission," Fin replied flatly. "See, this is why I didn't want to tell you. You always think you know what's best. You always have"

Fin didn't know it, but the sudden spike of anger he felt was enough to make his already wild magic strike out- Not at Pippa, but at the world. Though he wasn't so angry that it did any real damage. ...Instead it simply turned all the traffic lights in a four block radius red.

"It's only because I do know what's best," she huffed, her own magic reacting in response to his, twisting together with Fin's to amplify it. Traffic snarled and even the crossing lights stalled out, too. The wifi in the nearby cafe cut out.

"I'm just worried about you, Fin. This isn't the time for such a big change," she said.

Fin frowned, raking his fingers through his long hair. "Pip... It's not up to you, alright? I'm not asking, I'm just letting you know. I'm thinking I might do it, alright?" he replied, his tone growing sharper.

"This is stupid. Fin, please be rational about this. If nothing else, what about that fae fuck? You'll get sick again!" she insisted.

The Alpha boasted that it was the smallest bar in all of London, a point that was hotly contested by many other hole-in-the-wal bars around the city. It was a friendly rivalry and as with people's prefered football clubs, their pefered tiny bars caused some chaos from time to time.

Tonight wasn't that sort of night. Tonight Willy Silver, back from a long illness, took the stage with his guitar and a bassist and drummer and rocked the night. Of course his magic was back in full strength and the mortals had no knowledge that with the power of his music came the enchantment that made them joyful, free with tipping, and drinking more than they should.

In the crowd tonight there was a familiar face to some. Hex sat at the bar sipping a Coke on ice. He was Willy's to command for a year and a day and though he didn't know why he had been told to be here tonight...and so he was.

Crowley lurked outside, close enough to enjoy the music but just far eough out that he could chainsmoke and wile a bit. Not that his wiling did any good in the face of Willy's feel-good-abracadabra show. But it was worth trying.

And in the back corner, by the loo door, sat a hateful woman who glared at the fae prince the whole time. One day they'd have a conflict but for tonight Pippa just wanted to see what he was about. Her dark mood kept most as far away from her as they could get in the tiny bar.

"We're going to take a break, have a pint, get requests," Willy said from the stage, then the trio put their instruments down and joined the crowd.

How many times had he been abducted since becoming Quartermaster? Surely more than any before him. Perhaps he'd get some sort of plaque for that.

He would sulk, but on some level he knew this was his fault. He was far too involved with the field work. Far too eager to get involved in things. He should have been safe in his office, but he kept putting himself in danger. He kept getting involved in things he had no reason to get involved in. Sure, this time that hadn't been the case, Jack had grabbed him because he needed help, but still.

He was free now though, and his time with Jack had been- Well, alright, it had been lonely, but Jack had kept him fed and hadn't harmed him. He was okay. He was fine.

So why was his hand shaking?

Well, that was a bit not good, wasn't it? Certainly not something he could allow Six to see. There would be talk of trauma, psych evaluations... All the things Q liked to avoid.

So he was out, at the club, quite drunk, if he was honest. Remarkably drunk, actually. Drunker than he'd ever been before, possibly. His glasses kept threatening to slide off his face completely, and he was dancing. ...Well, if you could call it dancing. Q wasn't exactly graceful really. Slight and awkward, twisting with the music and dancing with anyone brave enough to take him on as a partner. ...and when he wasn't dancing, he was outside, chain smoking. Anything to keep himself calm.

The Tavern, as it was called, brought to mind images of faded Tudor quaintness: of whitewashed exterior, black beams, windows barred with cast iron, mulled mead and a fireplace in every room.

In truth, the pub was anything but. Located in one of the gentrifying suburbs, it was a modern bulwark of concrete, iron and glass. The first two stories were the pub proper, and the next ten were apartments. The owners had called it 'The Tavern' in a display of hipster pride, as if it was the only pub that mattered. Snaking through the two levels were a series of pipes, as small-scale brewing took place on site.

It was usually a lively sort of pub, populated mostly by the fussy, the well-off, the well-educated and those that aspired to be, although situated near a tube station meant it also got a lot of randoms peering in to grab a pint. The alcohol menu was diverse, the food menu was dominated by various pulled meats and a cheese board (if anyone cared) and there were probably far too many male graduate students with neckbeards who nodded enthusiastically at each other as they discussed Kant.

Still, on Saturday night it was even more bustling than usual. People stood on the stairs, beers in hand, and chatted. Every seat was taken. The wait staff had their hands full (literally), and moved with ease and grace through the throng to deliver food to tables, and collect numbers and plates.

Tonight there would be music. Tonight there would be bands. Tonight was Singles' Night, a guarantee of no sappy love songs, no heart break, no angst. Two local bands were playing: first there would be a set from The Flamethrowers, with a mix of classic rock and pop standards, and then after a break, there would be an electro-synth duo to allow for dancing well past midnight.

So at about 9pm, patrons were treated to the sight of the first band tuning up. There wasn't really a performance space, so much as a corner on the ground floor of the pub that was currently unoccupied by tables. It was a four-piece band: some shaggy-haired cross between hobo and hipster on rhythm guitar and vocals, a slightly older british caribbean guy in glasses with goatee on double bass, a short-haired woman in her mid-20s on percussion and vocals and a tendency to beat the ever-living fuck out of the drum set, and another woman, more long-haired and willowy, on keyboards and vocals. Mr Hobo-Hipster of the shaggy hair and blond tips sang lead most of the time, but he gave it up for each of the women through their eleven song set, and there were duets. The keyboard was set to produce a more honky-tonk piano sound, and combined with the double bass, most of the covers had a dirty feel to them, all loose chords and guitar slaps. Clearly they'd played together for long enough to have a good feel for each other, which just added to the looseness, the occasional digression or ad hoc solo.

And Mr Hobo-Hipster didn't so much as introduce the band members as say "Hey. We're the Flamethrowers" and then let his guitar speak for itself as they launched into a funked-up version of Money. His voice was a little rough, almost a growl, and his stage presence was contained but not muted. Even without posturing, John made it very clear that he was the driving force behind the band: he didn't preen or strut, he didn't need to, and only the hint of a smirk could be seen around his eyes. There was no grinning, not now: now he was controlled and contained and came off a little bit contemptuous of having to perform. He sang, sure, and he played, and played pretty well, but his focus were the frets of his guitar, the lyrics of the songs. That night, he was sleek and dangerous and full of pride. That night, he had no reasons to smile or grin or show how happy he was: he'd lost those along the way. He was pared back to his disdainful core. Overall, the band was good but not great, and with John being Intense, the performance probably came off somewhere between 'bluesy rock band' and 'satanic death cult'.

Grooving through the set-list for roughly 45 minutes, the Flamethrowers played a series of stripped-back, funked-up covers. Rock the Casbah. a slowed-down take on Time after Time. Versions of Dangerous and Sweet Dreams (are made of this) that were dominated by the keyboards and a sparse double bass. Everybody Wants to Rule the World. John's wry grin came out for a guitar driven, lazy run on Carole King's "It's Too Late", before he paused to finally introduce the band, have some water, and explain that the point was to avoid the melancholic and romantic: to not make anyone feel bad for being single.

Four more songs, and they then closed with Mama Told Me Not To Come, having meandered their way past some INXS, Living End and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

In the end, John thanked the band (again), thanked everyone for showing up, and hoped they passed the audition. As a nicety, he promised there would now be some 'music you can dance to' after a little break, and then disappeared to pack up his guitar and amp and find himself a drink and a quiet corner.

The night went on without him, and that was just fine.

[OOC: Saturday night at an upmarket pub and destination of note. Feel free to show up before, during or after the band. Complain about the noise, the locally brewed artisan beer, the hipster food, the even more hipster band, or just dance the night away.]
