Hex was Drunk. He'd been drunk for all of yesterday and the day before. He'd called off sick to work, claiming he had picked up norovirus- not unheard of for a medic. That allowed him time to make himself well and truly ill. He had started with pints, then pints and shots, and today he was on vodka neat. Doubles, now. He didn't sip, he gulped them down, then sipped water to help stay hydrated. He hadn't been to the gym, had barely even eaten. All he wanted to do was to be blind drunk and not think of what a selfish, awful, evil man he had been making that wish.

He had hurt his best friend in the world, a man he loved truly and deeply. How could he be so selfish? How could he be so low? He questioned himself over and over and when the questions stopped the inner accusations began. You're evil. You're filth. You'll never have anything more than lovers and they don't even care about you.

"Another," he said to the bartender.

"One more, then you go home, mate," the man replied as he poured another double for Hex.

He picked up the glass and wated how the vodka licked up the edge and clung like syrup. Then he downed it all at once. In a moment of clarity, drunken as it may be, he wrote a text to Q, then promply deleted it. The man would be so disappointed in him and he couldn't take another mate thinking he was rubbish.

Q seemed to come out of nowhere, quiet and calm as he perched himself on the stool beside Hex.

"I'll have a rum and coke, he'll have the same- Without the rum," he told the barman, who nodded his approval as the fluffy haired boffin turned on his stool to face Hex.

"I would scold you, but I imagine there's no point while you're in this state."

"Clearly," Q replied. "So, you're going to drink that cola, get some caffeine in you, and then I'm going to escort you home."

"Do you want to talk about it?" Q asked, his tone softening slightly. "Or would you rather ignore it tonight, focus on something else?"

"Jesus," Q said quietly. "Hex... God, that's- That's so unlike you. I know no one more concerned with consent and safety..."

He seemed to think for a moment, then frowned deeply. "In fact, it doesn't sound like you at all. ...Is it possible you were coerced in some way? That, perhaps, this fae deal wasn't all above board?"

Q wanted to shake him, to make him listen to what he was suggesting, to really think about how things had unfolded- But he knew it was no use in the other man's current state.

"Come on," he said instead. "Let me take you home. ...Or not home, if that's not where you want to be," he added kindly.

"A hotel then," Q offered.

"No, Q said softly, leaning over and kissing Hex's cheek. "Somewhere nice, I think."

Q nodded, and took over from there.

Tab paid, cab called, phone out as he tapped away to sort out a hotel room. Not too over the top, but nice enough. Followed by instructions to B to have something sent over and waiting, along with food he knew Hex liked, and fresh, strong tea waiting.

He was silent in the cab, all his focus on getting things sorted so it would be ready upon their arrival. Q didn't have many friends, and he wasn't about to lose one now. He wouldn't sit back and watch Hex crash and burn.

They arrived at the Grand, and Q held Hex's arm as he guided him out of the cab.

"James is well aware of his fortune," Q assured him.

"When we get to the room I'm going to give you a shot that will sober you up almost instantly. It'll be uncomfortable, but when it's finished you'll be fine. Sober, without any side effects. ...Do you consent?"

"Good, because I deserve your sobriety in return for what I intend to give you," Q replied tartly, leading the way from the lift to the room.

Two strong cups of tea were waiting on the table, along with some sort of medical kit, and what Q knew to be Hex's favourite healthy takeaway.

"Drink that, and eat some of that as well while I get this sorted. You'll need something solid on your stomach before I administer the shot."

Q didn't rush him, though he did check his phone a few times before pulling on a pair of gloves and approcing with a very intimidating looking needle.

"It's been tested, but still in early stages. You may throw up. However, no one who's taken it has felt sick for longer than a few minutes, and the sobering effects are almost immediate," he assured Hex as he pushed up the other man's sleeve.

"Just a little prick," he promised- Before jabbing the needle in deep and pressing down on the plunger.

'Little' may have been a slight understatement.

"Apologies," Q replied. "Take a moment, then there are clothes hanging in the bathroom. You should shower and change. We have company coming, and I promise you'll want to look your best."

Q didn't answer. Instead he picked up his phone to send a few more texts.

If Hex didn't dawdle, he could be clean and dressed before their guest arrived.
