Epimetheus wasn't like Prometheus when it came to powers and magic. He had power, sure, but he'd never mastered it the way his twin had. He hadn't needed to, really. He'd never been trapped in the mortal realm after all, he came and went as he pleased- Using portals. ...Portals he generally had others open for him. However, since he was traveling alone lately, the only way to pop back home for a bit was to crack one open himself, using the only spell he knew to do so. A very blunt spell, honestly, that Prometheus had scolded him time and time again for using. 'Spells like this aren't like garage door openers, you know. They don't just open one portal, they'll open any in range,' the other titan had scolded, though all Epimetheus had said in return was 'What's a garage door?'.

That had been some time ago, but Epimetheus had used the spell many times since. He'd never noticed any ill effects personally, and didn't have the foresight to see how it might go a bit wrong. So this morning when he'd popped home to see Pandora, he'd gone on as he always did- Oblivious to any trouble he might be causing elsewhere.

(Portals are opening and closing all over london, letting things into the city from other places, times, ect. The sky is the limit here! Have anything you want slip through into the city- Or maybe let your pups go stumbling through one themselves? The choice is yours! This post will be open all next week, so tag in and then check back often! As always, we trust you guys not to go too crazy with this power, but please, no wrecking the city or doing anything that might cause gamewide issues without checking in with us first. Also, like any plot, feel free to have your pups sit out or be completely oblivious to the chaos. Assume that Torchwood and the like are keeping it out of the papers. ;) Have fun!)

Felix did not know this song, and he did not know this magic, but that did not stop it from working before his eyes. "You're going to have to tell me how you do that," he muttered quickly, but even though Curnen had bought them some time, he couldn't spend it all discussing the nuances of her magic with her.

Curnen's song was aging the creature, molecule by molecule, but Felix could see there was something more. It was there in the song -- her tarnished heart lost its way. The tendrils of rust and tiny cracks coalesced around where the heart of the automaton would have been, if it were somehow human. Felix did not know the first thing about robot construction, or why it should matter, but he could see one thing.

"It's empty," he realized out loud, bringing up one tattooed hand that crackled with purple lightning. "It still has power but it has no direction. All I can do it... try to short it out." Which sounded almost as dangerous as letting the twelve-foot-tall metal man try to punch them to death.

It sounded mad, but when you had no choice did that really matter?

Curnen didn't dare break her concentration or stop the song now that she'd started. The closest she allowed herself to get was to slip back into humming while she listened. She nodded, her black eyes bright with urgency, which would have to serve for her answer. Her voice lifted in song again.

Seventh sons and golden ball daughters
can take their own lives to hand
I have been to the city of Marrow
and I have come out again

It was just a part of the song, responding the dark magic of this wood, but it was also the encouragement she had to hand. They were just passing through, and they would get out again.

Yes, quite, Felix thought, meeting Curnen's gaze for just another moment. Giving her song time enough to weaken the creature as much as he dared allow.

Then he swung around, stepping forward, and pulled back one tattooed hand like he was about to throw the world's least accurate overhand pitch. Instead what he threw was an arcing bolt of bright green energy that leapt from his fingers and exploded at the seam of the automaton's head and chest. It was the only gap he could find, and the most likely place to locate the thing's power source.

At least, that was where Felix would put it, if he had built such a thing. And he knew this thing had been made by a wizard.

There was a fierce, deafening rumble and clanging, like someone had trapped a thunderstorm in a massive kettle. All Felix could really see was that the shape of the automaton was still coming closer. He didn't know if it was inertia or if the thing was moving under its own power.

The second arc of green lightning sent it falling over backwards, one metal fist still raised to the sky.

One did not simply stop a dying dirge. Even if it was for a machine. Even when you questioned for a moment if you'd ever hear anything again.

But Curnen kept the song going, even after the thing fell, her eyes enormous with wonder from the way Felix had struck it down. Her voice softened down gradually, as if lulling the thing to sleep. If any vestige of its power had survived that, she wanted to make sure it was good and fucking smothered.

Fear not the wind of wasting
Its howling is not for you
Only an echo now within
the hearts of those just passing through
the hearts of those long ago passed through

She was quiet a moment when she was done. And then, like that whole episode of her own weirdness hadn't happened she just said, "Holy shit."

Felix folded over at the waist, propping his hands on his knees, and took a few struggling breaths. It was the lay-over of fear and the rush of adrenaline more than the effort of the magic, which for him, had not been that great.

"I can agree with your sentiment if not your vocabulary," he still managed to drawl dryly.

"Fuck fuckity fuck fuck fuck," Curnen answered without batting an eyelash, just because the profanity clearly bugged him. Even so, Bliss would probably cuff her for being childish. Momma would have washed her mouth out with soap.

"You all right?"

Felix's annoyance served to settle his emotions far better than any sort of comforting might have. In that, Curnen displayed some form of genius. He managed to take one continuous breath and let it out. "I'm not exactly a combat wizard."

Built like he was, Felix wasn't a combat anything. But that was a bit too mean for her, so instead, "And I'm not exactly a combat fairy," Curnen countered with a shrug. "So I think we're even."

Felix looked at her speculatively. "That was a smart bit of magic, regardless. Must the song be related to the effect you're trying to create? Do you have specific songs for specific spells? I have some passing familiarity with Fae magic, though, clearly, not a practitioner myself."

And, yes, he was going to stand here on a train track with a metal monster dead a few meters away and quiz her about how her magic worked. Thank you very much.

Curnen blinked at him, her eyes by now no different from any human's eyes once more.

"The song has to be right," she said simply. "And that can mean a lot of things. What you want, who you are, how strong you are, where you are, any number of other things. There's some small things that have set songs, but if you wanna do something big..." she shrugged.

"If you're meant to do it, the right song comes to you."

"How lovely," Felix said dryly. He began to move closer to the downed automaton, now that it had stopped ticking. The silence was startling. "No need to study the same spell for a dozen years. If you're meant to cast it, it just comes to you."

Tentatively, Felix nudged the top of the metal thing's head with his boot. When it did not respond, he began to walk around it, wanting a closer look.

You asked, dickweed. But she could not explain it better without telling him about the night wind, and that she would not do.

"Sometimes it sucks, actually," Curnen said with a shrug, moving closer to the automaton out of her own curiosity. "You want a thing, need a thing, but you're not the right person to do it. Or it ain't time."

"Who decides?" Felix asked, crouching down to get a better look at the seam where he'd caught a glimpse of what he thought to be the power source. "Who decides who is right or when the time is?"

"Reckon you could ask that about anything people try to do," Curnen answered, which actually wasn't an attempt at being glib. It was the way she'd been raised to see the world. Most Tufa couldn't hear the night wind speaking to them in words--that was Mandalay's nightmare to handle--but it could send signs. "Ain't really that anybody decides, at least not on their own. Someone might choose to be a leader, but they need people to willing follow 'em or a way to put enough of 'em down or have the talent of persuasion. If someone's in the slot they want, they gotta wait for an opening, or they gotta be stronger and take 'em out. Without the right circumstances, don't matter how much you holler at the world, world don't care."

Why her mind had gone to goddamn Bo-Kate of all things, she didn't want to know.

She tipped her head to one side as she looked at the metal thing's head. "It's got horns," she mused with a little frown.

Felix was about to comment on the similarities and differences between Curnen's people and the Cabalines, when her statement distracted him. "It has what now? Horns like a bull or horns like a... er, like an automobile?" he asked briskly, coming around to where she stood so he could see what she saw.

"Hush," Felix instructed, and crouched down closer. Now that he could inspect it, the automaton seemed to be half-wrapped in vines and dead leaves, which made the wizard's own tattooed fingers twitch nervously. He reached out to clear away some of the moss clinging to the metal, but quickly drew his hands back again as if burned.

"Look at the mold, and this rust. This thing hasn't moved for a very long time."

Curnen rolled her eyes, but she bit her lip as she grinned so she wouldn't continue to laugh.

But that did explain why her song had had the effect it did. "The forest was doing its best to take it back. It's practically doing an impression of a dead tree."

Felix had to admit that was an apt descriptor. "That would mean that it came from the forest at some point. A mad steam engine with delusions of grandeur?" he asked, nodding at the clear, well-used train tracks that indicated some familiar level of technology nearby. "And if it was so still for so long, what woke it up?"

"It was built in this forest," Curnen answered with certainty, squatting down to look close. She had no idea what this story was, but that much she could feel. She smoothed a hand over the moss, almost as if she were stroking hair. "Whatever woke it up, it ain't something that's part of this wood."

Felix looked only vaguely skeptical about Curnen's feelings, and only for a moment. There were times his magic told him things that he 'just knew,' as well. That didn't mean he accepted it as absolute truth, but as a working theory it would do.

"Isn't," he said, unable to stop himself. "So, someone built a massive metal minotaur, filled it up with magic, and let it run out to the point that it laid in the forest long enough to nearly become part of it. Then, more recently, some foreign incursion got it running again, and it thought we looked like a tasty snack." Because it was obvious that the automaton had pushed that tree over to trap them.

"At least I think we needn't be concerned that we've just killed someone's science project."

"Might be we woke it up. Ran on magic, perhaps ours smelled tasty. Or one of us at least," she said. "Or it thought we were a threat somehow."

Curnen turned to look at him then, and gave him a wry little smile that was much too old for the face she wore. "Uppity white people been trying to make me talk right since before your great-great-great grandparents even existed. You're not gonna win."

Felix had gotten curious about the inner workings of the automaton, and had reached for the horn-like protrusions to attempt to turn its head enough to get a better look into the eyes. Absently, despite the 'uppity' label, he answered her, "I don't do it for you."

"In a way." Felix managed to wrench the bucket-like head around enough that the eye openings were exposed, but he rocked back onto his rump in the gravel in the process. He scowled, but not at Curnen. "Have you ever known someone who was so likely to speak some particular phrase, or argue some particular point, that you find yourself making it for him, just so you don't have to hear it?"
