Epimetheus wasn't like Prometheus when it came to powers and magic. He had power, sure, but he'd never mastered it the way his twin had. He hadn't needed to, really. He'd never been trapped in the mortal realm after all, he came and went as he pleased- Using portals. ...Portals he generally had others open for him. However, since he was traveling alone lately, the only way to pop back home for a bit was to crack one open himself, using the only spell he knew to do so. A very blunt spell, honestly, that Prometheus had scolded him time and time again for using. 'Spells like this aren't like garage door openers, you know. They don't just open one portal, they'll open any in range,' the other titan had scolded, though all Epimetheus had said in return was 'What's a garage door?'.

That had been some time ago, but Epimetheus had used the spell many times since. He'd never noticed any ill effects personally, and didn't have the foresight to see how it might go a bit wrong. So this morning when he'd popped home to see Pandora, he'd gone on as he always did- Oblivious to any trouble he might be causing elsewhere.

(Portals are opening and closing all over london, letting things into the city from other places, times, ect. The sky is the limit here! Have anything you want slip through into the city- Or maybe let your pups go stumbling through one themselves? The choice is yours! This post will be open all next week, so tag in and then check back often! As always, we trust you guys not to go too crazy with this power, but please, no wrecking the city or doing anything that might cause gamewide issues without checking in with us first. Also, like any plot, feel free to have your pups sit out or be completely oblivious to the chaos. Assume that Torchwood and the like are keeping it out of the papers. ;) Have fun!)

"Who decides?" Felix asked, crouching down to get a better look at the seam where he'd caught a glimpse of what he thought to be the power source. "Who decides who is right or when the time is?"

"Reckon you could ask that about anything people try to do," Curnen answered, which actually wasn't an attempt at being glib. It was the way she'd been raised to see the world. Most Tufa couldn't hear the night wind speaking to them in words--that was Mandalay's nightmare to handle--but it could send signs. "Ain't really that anybody decides, at least not on their own. Someone might choose to be a leader, but they need people to willing follow 'em or a way to put enough of 'em down or have the talent of persuasion. If someone's in the slot they want, they gotta wait for an opening, or they gotta be stronger and take 'em out. Without the right circumstances, don't matter how much you holler at the world, world don't care."

Why her mind had gone to goddamn Bo-Kate of all things, she didn't want to know.

She tipped her head to one side as she looked at the metal thing's head. "It's got horns," she mused with a little frown.

Felix was about to comment on the similarities and differences between Curnen's people and the Cabalines, when her statement distracted him. "It has what now? Horns like a bull or horns like a... er, like an automobile?" he asked briskly, coming around to where she stood so he could see what she saw.

Curnen snorted with barely choked down laughter. "Did you seriously just... Like a bull," she said, pointing at the thing's head.

"Hush," Felix instructed, and crouched down closer. Now that he could inspect it, the automaton seemed to be half-wrapped in vines and dead leaves, which made the wizard's own tattooed fingers twitch nervously. He reached out to clear away some of the moss clinging to the metal, but quickly drew his hands back again as if burned.

"Look at the mold, and this rust. This thing hasn't moved for a very long time."

Curnen rolled her eyes, but she bit her lip as she grinned so she wouldn't continue to laugh.

But that did explain why her song had had the effect it did. "The forest was doing its best to take it back. It's practically doing an impression of a dead tree."

Felix had to admit that was an apt descriptor. "That would mean that it came from the forest at some point. A mad steam engine with delusions of grandeur?" he asked, nodding at the clear, well-used train tracks that indicated some familiar level of technology nearby. "And if it was so still for so long, what woke it up?"

"It was built in this forest," Curnen answered with certainty, squatting down to look close. She had no idea what this story was, but that much she could feel. She smoothed a hand over the moss, almost as if she were stroking hair. "Whatever woke it up, it ain't something that's part of this wood."

Felix looked only vaguely skeptical about Curnen's feelings, and only for a moment. There were times his magic told him things that he 'just knew,' as well. That didn't mean he accepted it as absolute truth, but as a working theory it would do.

"Isn't," he said, unable to stop himself. "So, someone built a massive metal minotaur, filled it up with magic, and let it run out to the point that it laid in the forest long enough to nearly become part of it. Then, more recently, some foreign incursion got it running again, and it thought we looked like a tasty snack." Because it was obvious that the automaton had pushed that tree over to trap them.

"At least I think we needn't be concerned that we've just killed someone's science project."

"Might be we woke it up. Ran on magic, perhaps ours smelled tasty. Or one of us at least," she said. "Or it thought we were a threat somehow."

Curnen turned to look at him then, and gave him a wry little smile that was much too old for the face she wore. "Uppity white people been trying to make me talk right since before your great-great-great grandparents even existed. You're not gonna win."

Felix had gotten curious about the inner workings of the automaton, and had reached for the horn-like protrusions to attempt to turn its head enough to get a better look into the eyes. Absently, despite the 'uppity' label, he answered her, "I don't do it for you."

"In a way." Felix managed to wrench the bucket-like head around enough that the eye openings were exposed, but he rocked back onto his rump in the gravel in the process. He scowled, but not at Curnen. "Have you ever known someone who was so likely to speak some particular phrase, or argue some particular point, that you find yourself making it for him, just so you don't have to hear it?"

Felix gave a small sound of agreement. Curnen was smart, he knew. The voice he was superseding wasn't hers, or his own, so the only place he might have heard it was in his own head.

He bent over, pushing on one of the red glass inserts in the automaton's eyes until it fell inward and he could peer inside. Half a dozen little glowing chrysanthemums, the exact shade of green as the energy he'd hurled at the thing, appeared to light the inside of its head. "Now what in the world is that. It looks like... I have to confess, I don't know what it looks like. Do you know anything about mechanics?"

"I've been under the hood of a truck before," Curnen said with a shrug, leaning in for a closer look. Engines had changed considerably in the time she'd been lost in the woods, but she wasn't completely ignorant. "It's prolly an engine control unit or something like. Something that keeps all the functions of an engine working together the right way. So it's kinda like a brain."

Felix made a thoughtful sound and pushed his witch-lights in further. The metal workings were clearly blackened, fused together in places. "That seems to be part of what I hit," he said dryly.

"Hitting things in the head tends to work," Curnen agreed with a little laugh. "And hitting something like that would do it fine. Transmission would prolly work, too, I imagine that'd be in the chest."

"I don't think we're going to manage to get this thing on its back, between just the two of us," Felix speculated. "Though if this route is in regular use, someone is going to be terribly surprised the next time they pass through here."

He sighed, still so desperately curious about the automaton but having no way to get the answers he wanted. "I would dearly love to study this longer, but I can't stay here. We can't stay here."

Curnen nodded her agreement, pushing herself back up to her feet and looking as far as she could down the track. She didn't bother with looking through the trees. "We're not supposed to be here."

She considered the felled tree in the other direction as well, mostly certain that she could scramble over it.

Felix took a longer moment to haul himself up again, the witchlights going out as he forgot about them. "I don't suppose you have a song that will help us find a portal back to London?"

"I got a couple of ideas..." Curnen murmured, moving towards the huge tree that blocked the tracks. With no holds but the bark, she effortlessly scrambled up to see beyond. She'd only wanted to see--what was on the other side, how far she'd be able to see from this vantage point. Because there was no doubt about it, if they went into the trees, they were fucked.

She hummed idly, nothing that led to a tune, not yet. It had to be right. Whatever she sang, it had to be right.

Felix was able to use a branch to help himself up to sit on the tree, and being that his legs were decidedly longer than Curnen's, he didn't have much difficulty getting up. "I can... listen. Raptly."

And that was all. He surely could not sing, nor could he tell direction beyond toward the giant robot he just killed and away from the giant robot he just killed. While he didn't like leaving this journey to Curnen's inexplicable form of magic, it wasn't as if Felix had much choice.

Curnen laughed at that. "Anybody can sing, it's that in tune part that's the question." Still, she chewed her lip thoughtfully. "So, with your rapt listening, you got any songs that make you think of home?" Between the two of them, Felix was the one with the stronger tie to the city, and everybody had something they'd tied to a memory or a person or a place.

She had some ideas in mind as well and her voice was strong, but why half ass this?

Yes, one came immediately to his mind. That much was clear from the uncomfortable frown and glancing away that suddenly overtook Felix's expression. "I... you wouldn't know it. I had the arrangement composed specially."
