It was happening more often now. The air shivered with the dark magic that was flowing more and more freely through London, leaving all it touched with a feeling of unease, and promising nasty nightmares and troubles to all who felt it in their bones.

Tonight dark creatures came slithering out of the sewers. Ghosts of the dead with cruel hearts, shadows of villains and wicked souls... They were welcomed into London with open arms, appearing and vanishing, and causing pain wherever they wandered.

Tonight the people of london caught a glimpse of the danger coming. A danger that was making itself more and more known as the year continued on.

(OTA! Wild magic is back, though it doesn't have to be evil, it can just be pestering or annoying if you'd rather this time around. You are only limited by your imagination (and what you care to make your pups suffer through). The only thing of note is that for those who are sensitive to magic, it will seem even stronger than the last time.)

The magic had surged again, aimless and unpredictable, pressing and nudging against the cracks of London to find its way inside. Without knowing the source, the direction of the incursion, the Cabal could only do so much. The Virtu, the enormous blue jewel suspended beneath the Mirador building, stayed steady and strong. It protected all of England -- that was what the Cabalines had taught Felix since he first came to them. But how and from what?

At least he no longer had to argue it with them. Every Cabaline wizard felt the pressure of the wild magic now.

Felix had done all he could at the Mirador, but he did not recall how he got out onto the street. He could have called a car, or called Shannon, or done anything but wander off into London at night. He'd never felt so utterly drained, and now... was that a trace of pale green light bleeding off his fingertips?

Felix had only an instant to blink at the sight because before claimed him completely, and he slumped over on his feet, directly into the path of another pedestrian.

Prometheus had caught a glimpse of the phoenix, he was hard to miss after all, but hadn't been paying him much mind. There was something unsettling in the air tonight, and he had no desire to linger outdoors. His intention had been to stop by his studio to work on his latest piece, before slinking back home to Robin's for the night, preferably with the windows and doors shut tight.

Those plans, however, were quickly derailed as the phoenix began to fall just as Prometheus strolled past him. It was as though the thick cloud of magic itself had knocked the poor creature right off its feet. Instinct took over, and the titan caught him in strong arms, holding him steady and close.

"Not an ideal place to take a tumble, pet. Come along, let's get you off the street," he said softly, his voice soothing as it cut through the thick fog of crackling magic that seemed to linger in the air.

Everything was a very confusing blur to Felix just then, though a sense of relief cut through it all when he distantly felt himself supported by something, or someone, with more strength than he had just then. His entire body seemed made of lead, filled up with weight, leaving no room for anything else. Not even his magic...

When he realized that he could barely feel his own magic, the constant companion and reassurance he'd known every minute of his life since he was fourteen years old, a blind panic seized him. He froze in the sure grip of the arms holding him, his pulse suddenly racing as his eyes flew open and he struggled to make sense of what he was feeling and seeing. In that moment, the man holding him was a complete stranger, and Felix stared at him in terrified incomprehension, unable to move.

"It's alright, dove. You're alright," Prometheus assured him, studying him a beat and then flexing his power a little. He still didn't use it as much as he once had, he was always worried using his power might attract unwanted attention from those back home- The young wizard was clearly in distress though, and Prometheus acted without thought as he flexed time and space around them. It was something he'd not done in a very long time. Something he'd likely not do again soon. ...But in an instant they were tucked away in the old flat above his shop, and he was lowering Felix onto an old but fine looking sofa.

"You may feel a touch sea sick," he warned. "Apologies for that."

Honestly, he wasn't certain how lucid the wizard was, and he took a step back to see how he'd react- If he reacted at all.

Maybe Felix had hallucinated that first waking moment of flashback-level fright, outdoors and in the grip of a stranger, for now he was stable and seated. Maybe even safe. Maybe... but now the world was tilting dangerously, and Felix pulled away from the presence of another person and into the sofa that felt solid and real. He was exposed, he was vulnerable, and...

Oh, hells, without his magic he was completely defenseless. Twelve years old again, and at the mercy of anyone who laid a hand on him.

Felix looked like a caged animal when his eyes snapped open and he tried to remember where he knew that face from. "You... you're... Robin's... n-no. Prometheus?"

"I am," Prometheus nodded, moving to fill the kettle and placing it on the stove.

"No need to be frightened, darling. Take your time, gather up your ashes, your flame will ignite again when it's ready," he murmured, though he was speaking mostly to comfort the young wizard, rather than actually say anything.

His flame... his magic. It wasn't gone, but it wasn't there the way he expected it to be, the way it had been for the last decade and more of his life. Felix was too exhausted to panic, and so the helplessness of his current state settled into his chest like a lead weight of fear. "How did I get... where are we?"

Felix rested his spinning head in his hands, though he tried to watch Prometheus through his fingers -- caught between his own exhaustion and his inability to trust anyone trying to take care of him. "What..." he tried, but realized blurrily that what do you want with me? was perhaps not a productive question. Instead he tried, "Why... am I here?"

"I just thought you might prefer to land on a sofa rather than cement," Prometheus shrugged. "I can take you back, if you like, petal... You don't seem to be in any fit state to be alone though," he added as the kettle came to a boil.

Felix didn't want to be alone, though if he could have chosen his company, this was not what he would have selected. His panic was subsiding, but he still wasn't thinking clearly. "I remember coming out of the Mirador, but then... I... I blacked out?" He frowned, unable to remember. That blank stretch in his memory, however brief, was almost more frightening than the blank patch where his magic should be.

"You... didn't have to help me," Felix realized out loud. "You don't even like me."

"I don't?" Prometheus asked. "Or am I just not as charmed by you as most undoubtedly are?"

He shrugged then, indicating it didn't much matter either way, and brought over two mugs of tea. He held one out in offering to Felix, then sank down lazily into a chair beside him.

"I'm not expert on wizards, petal, but it would seem whatever enchanting energy is currently coursing through London doesn't agree with you at all."

Felix thought quite certainly that Prometheus disliked him... but his memory was something of a muddle. Perhaps he'd gotten it backwards.

He accepted the tea, and the heat in his hands was enough to allow him to ease the defensive hunch of his shoulders. Felix held the cup close to his chest, like a shield rather than a beverage. "We were reinforcing the defenses," the wizard mumbled into his cup.

For an instant, he tensed again; once long ago he'd been severely punished for not speaking clearly. He swallowed hard, and when he spoke again, it was with careful elocution. "It isn't enough. We can't hold it back. I've... never overspent myself before. I didn't think I could."

The titan nodded in understanding, listening rather than speaking for now. He was no wizard after all, and even his vast amount of knowledge didn't make him omniscient. He did, however, know that not even all the gods were omnipotent, and after a moment he offered what little knowledge he did have.

"No power is truly unlimited, in my experience. It requires tending and replenishing. ...You and yours are fighting something very powerful, and very old. As old as the earth itself, I imagine. This energy flows through all of the Earth, from the black mountains to the valleys lost deep beneath the sea, I'm not certain it can be held back. It would be like wrapping a rubber band around your finger, you might stop the blood, but other problems will quickly arise... Starting with the loss of that finger."

Felix's magic was shaped by metaphor, and he understood Prometheus' all too well. He had always found the Cabal's members themselves rather stifling, but he believed in their shared purpose. The Virtu and the Mirador protected the country. That had been true for over a millennium... hadn't it?

"You think we may be strangling London in our effort to protect it. It's... possible. It's not impossible. But there's no record of anything of this magnitude for hundreds of years. By all of our calculations, our methods have been working. They've always worked."

"I'm not certain of anything, only suggesting one of many possible scenarios. That's the trouble with foresight, you can see the troubles ahead, but you can't always see what's going on right now," he shrugged, pausing to sip his tea. "We're supposed to protect England," Felix said quietly into his cup. "That's what the Virtu is for. We can't hold it back, or stop it. We can't fulfill the only bloody thing the Cabal really exists to do. My magic has given up on me and we're no closer than we were when none of them believed me."

Prometheus sympathised- Or, perhaps, empathised. He wasn't sure which it was, really. He only knew he felt for the phoniex, with his singed feathers and wilting plumage.

"I wish I could tell you all will be well, and that you'll find a way- But even I can't see the outcome of all this," he confessed.

"I wouldn't want to know, even if you did," Felix answered, automatically but not insincerely. He had no foresight, of course, but he thought he could see something. Fuzzy around the edges, as if he and Prometheus were set at an odd angle from the rest of the world. His odd eyes did not quite focus entirely.

"This isn't the only thing I'm going to lose, before this is over."

Magic wasn't something wizards were supposed to think about. It was something you did; something you used. That was all. It was controlled through wards and wands; those who used magic more freely, who were of magic, such as the goblins, the house elves, the centaurs - even the werewolves - they were all a little suspect and frankly unBritish, to say nothing of inhuman.

So Remus mostly squared his shoulders and tried to ignore it. Uncontrolled power was always dangerous power: it was spontaneous and primal. While it made the wolf in him a little less angry, it also made it louder, his reflexes a bit quicker, mood a touch more protective and playful than normal for this time of the month. He'd taken to repeating snatches of poetry in his mind as a way of keeping calm: mostly T S Eliot. It wasn't exactly a Zen koan, but it would do.

He'd seen Felix up ahead, and approached him from behind, glad for the distraction - at which point Felix sagged, and Remus lunged, and ended up with a rather tall wizard in his arms. A few passersby stopped and gawked, and Remus had told them firmly not to just stand there, but help him! - and so with one lugging Felix's feet, the pair of them had gotten Felix to the nearest bench. Remus had thanked the young woman, assured them his friend would be fine, even as he reached to place fingers along the inside of Felix's wrist, to check his pulse, peer at his pupils, loosen his collar. He was almost clinical about it, but then his mother had been a nurse.

The last thing Felix recalled clearly had been looking up at the stars and wondering where the day had gone. When he next recognized being conscious, he was seated, and it was still dark, but someone was touching him and he didn't know why. His pulse had been steady and vital in the moments he'd sat still enough for Remus to check, which was good, because as he came to Felix jerked his hand away and pulled both hands up defensively to his chest. Curled up, shoulders hunched, he seemed nothing more than a child who expected to be struck at any moment.

After the span of a breath, Felix realized what he was doing, and he blinked his eyes open slowly. His shoulders started to relax, but he peered at the man beside him in utter bewilderment. "... Remus?"

"I do hope you weren't expecting someone else," Remus murmured, before offering him a bit of a smile. He took in Felix's reactions, and didn't offer him any sort of further physical reassurance - no squeeze to his shoulder, or friendly pat. Felix kept himself apart from others, and Remus respected that. He didn't need to pry.

"Could I get a glass of water, please? Thank you." That was said to the waiter who had emerged from the throng of onlookers, clearly annoyed and ready to share that annoyance with the two men who had ended up on the bench outside one of those fashionable street-side bistros. Remus' question forestalled any complaint, and his attention was back soon on Felix, if it had ever left. "...You had a bit of a faint, dear. But everything seems fine." Questions of its cause were better uttered away from concerned passersby.

Felix hadn't yet noticed the other people staring at him, which was good, because he was in no state to verbally eviscerate anyone -- which was his usual response to anyone who paid him unwanted attention. It was bad enough that he was coming to realize how poorly he'd reacted to Remus' kindness, which... somehow just earned him more kindness. People were inexplicable.

His gaze darted, rapid-fire, from Remus' face to Remus' hands, and only focused on the former when he felt convinced that his friend had left off attempting to comfort him with patting. "We've been working all day," Felix finally said, very soft. "I couldn't... I didn't think I could... I spent everything I had."

That was only half the story of course, but Remus could guess at the other half from what he could see.

"Then you should go home and have yourself a good night's sleep," Remus told him, although he recognised Felix would just as likely do nothing of the sort. "And in the meantime," he reached into a pocket of his jacket and pulled out a shiny, foil-wrapped block, unfurling the already creased foil to snap off a block of confectionary. "Chocolate," he advised, placing it in Felix's hands, even as he smoothly reached past him to collect the glass of water that had arrived, waiter in tow. "Would you like a sip of water?" He might have gotten the glass for Felix, but he wasn't about to force it down the man's throat. Obstinate patients were not very good patients, in Remus' experience.

Felix put out his tattooed hand to accept the chocolate, though he did so with an expression of bafflement at this odd gesture. He blinked at it, then at Remus, then nodded to accept the glass of water. His mouth did feel rather dry.

After a sip, he rearranged the square of chocolate in his fingers, holding it as if it were a particularly large tablet he needed to take. Felix looked up at Remus, as though for permission. "Is it... medicine?"
