Haunted House GP

 The house doesn't exist, that's the first thing anyone who might find themselves inside it would want to know. Now, you might ask how one could find themselves inside something that doesn't exist, but you'd honestly be better off asking yourself how you could leave something that doesn't exist. After all, ideas and concepts can't be burnt or broken, and you can't breakdown a door that's not there- Or was there and then decided to be somewhere else for a while...

 

You wake in a house though, a house that doesn't exist. A house that defies the laws of reality. There are corridors that go on for days, rooms full of nightmares, and millions of doors that lead you anywhere but out. Trapped inside with you are dozens of other people, all searching for an exit, or an explanation.

 

Behind every door you'll find your darkest fears, maybe even memories you've tried to forget, or secrets you never wanted to share... 

 

(OTA! Here is your first of two Halloween gps! This one is, of course, set in the haunted house where your pup can run into anything you can dream up! Deadly traps! Spooky monsters! An existential crises! Top level your pups waking up or running into danger, and then go ahead and tag other players! Since this is all magic-y and spooky don't worry too much about time lines and who bumped into who first. Only rule is that your pup can't escape until November 1st! Have fun! Also, because there are two GPs going up this week, both are open to new top levels for two whole weeks! And, of course, you can keep tagging long after that if you want. :D I'll post reminders daily on slack.)

"Really? Brilliant," Val beamed, his smile making it obvious that this one little thing meant the world to him.

Jag smiled in answer, his own less radiant but no less appreciative, as he reached up to brush a thumb just underneath that gorgeous smile. The look definitely made him feel better about it, and he leaned in to give Val a (quick) kiss. "Lead the way."

Val leaned into the touch, then nodded, eager to block out the strange nightmare they'd just survived.

It was odd, Jag reflected a short while later, as he watched Val move about the kitchen, making breakfast. He'd been instructed to sit down and let him work, so he was doing just that, and watching him. And it was odd, because he really ought to be deeply uneasy, round about then. You could have fit a small flat in the kitchens (they were big enough that Jag thought they deserved a plural), a clear sign of opulence and everything that usually made him uneasy.

But it was just the two of them, and Val moved very confidently about the space. Jag's gaze kept being drawn to the width of his shoulders, the line of his jaw, the curve of his arse. Was he supposed to find cooking breakfast sexy? Val made it sexy, right now. Jag was going to blame that on the emotional rollercoaster that had been last night, and just be glad that he could simply enjoy this moment, without anything else creeping into it.

"So where's your granda live?" he asked after a bit, forcing himself to make conversation instead of just watching Val.

"He passed," Val replied as he started to cook the eggs. "A few years back, actually. Lung cancer. He owned one of the coal mines, before Thatcher closed them. He used to go down every day while they were open. He liked being accessible to the people who worked for him. ...A good man, though it did him no favours long term."

Looking over his shoulder, he smiled at Jag. "He fought in the war as well, can't imagine that did him much good either. Though I don't believe he regretted either for even a moment."

Sounded like a better bloke than Val's father, that was for certain. It was about the first time Val talked about his family and Jag didn't feel angry on his behalf. "Was he your mum or your dad's father?"

"Mum's," Val smiled, tossing a bit more bacon into the pan as he spoke. "I always liked him, he was a bit odd- I liked that. At Christmas he used to dress like Santa and hang out in the town square."

"Yeah?" Jag kind of had to smile at that, and the smell of bacon drew him to get up and come to join Val, try and snag a strip of already cooked bacon right out of the pan as he stood behind the other man, a hand on his waist. "Good memories, then?"

"Very," Val smiled, leaning back slightly against Jag.

"You've no idea what a relief this is," he said after a moment. "Not just to be out of that place, but- To have you here. Talking to me. ...I thought- I thought I'd lost this. ...I so very badly didn't want to lose this. Whatever this is."

Jag rested his chin on Val's shoulder after eating that bit of bacon, wrapping both arms around his waist now, linking his hands on his stomach. It was like Val was saying everything he felt but couldn't put into words. "I'm shit at saying things," he warned Val, turning his head in to press a kiss to his neck, then speak against his skin. "But, yeah. All of that."

Val let out a small sigh of relief, thankful Jag felt the same as he covered on of the other man's hands with his own.

"Good. That's- That's good," he smiled. "Come on, let's eat."

Once again torn between wanting more physical intimacy and wanting to give Val what he wanted, Jag took a few seconds before pulling back, with great effort. "Yeah, let's," he agreed, looking around at the many cupboards. "Plates?" He had no idea where to find anything.

"Um- Oh, uh, this one, I think," he said, pointing and laughing softly.

Jag went to the one he pointed at and only found glasses in it, but grabbed two of the simpler ones and tried the next cupboard over. There, plates. He brought it back to the long table in the middle of the room.

"I don't come here often," Val admitted with a nervous smile, bringing the food over and starting to plate it.

"It seems like a shame," Jag replied, pulling drawers open until he found the right one for forks and knives. "Having all this space and not using it."

"It gets used. Like I said, it's a wedding hall most of the time," Val smiled. "I've heard there's a hotel chain that would like to buy it though."

"That sounds... impersonal," Jag said hesitantly, coming back to the table with the cutlery.

"It would be the sensible thing to do though. It's just land, no one lives here now," Val shrugged as he finally moved to sit. "Not my choice though. It's up to my mother what happens to this place."

Jag instinctively sought Val's foot with his own under the table, resting his ankle against his. It was silly, but he felt better for being able to touch him. "Don't you get a say?"

Val shrugged, returning the gesture and looking thoughtful. "I suppose if I had an opinion, my mother would listen- But honestly? It would be good to have a hotel here. Something a bit grand. It's good for tourism, and the town could use something like that."

Jag couldn't imagine letting go of so much history, but maybe Val didn't feel as if it were his. Not everyone dealt the same way with being adopted. Either way, it felt a bit like a minefield of a conversation, so he shrugged. "As long as you're happy. Have you spent a lot of time here?"

"Not since I was very young," Val replied, stabbing a bit of bacon with his fork as he shook his head. "It was remodelled a while back- It's all very different from when I was a boy," he admitted.

"What was it like then?" Jag asked curiously, getting into the food with gusto. He really had been starving.

"Darker," Val said thoughtfully. "A bit stuffy and Victorian- But I like that sort of thing. I like that slight gothic edge."
