"Danny," he sighed with concern and shook his head. "I...don't know how to help you, mate. But I hate to think of you going this alone."
no subject
"I'm not going to be alone tonight," Danny said quietly. "That's something, isn't it?"
no subject
"That is something," he smiled and moved in to slip his arm round Danny's waist to lead him on. Their bags swung in time with their steps and before they left the neighborhood of the museum there was a small petrol station.
"We should get some rubbish. Crisps and candy and some cigarettes for you. I want a drink," he said, leading the way inside out of the cold.
"Merry Christmas," came flatly out of the bored looking girl behind the counter. She snapped her gum and turned the pages of a pap rag, waiting for the pair to hurry and leave again.

Danny grabbed a little bag of Wotsits, pulling out his wallet to see if he had enough- Then frowned when he found a hundred pound note.
"Did you give me this?" he asked Hex, holding the bill up in show.
no subject
"No, not me...but I got one too. They were slipping them pockets at the party," Hex smiled. "I told you...Willy and Fin are bloody generous. Probably hired a pickpocket off the street to do it."
no subject
"And loaded, apparently," Danny replied, still staring at the bill- Then putting the crisps back. He wouldn't waste his money on chips. A hundred quid was groceries for the whole flat for a week or two.
no subject
Hex picked them back up and added them to his pile and paid without fuss.
"Let's get in and get some tea before we freeze," he said.
no subject
Danny frowned, wishing Hex would stop paying his way. It was Christmas Eve though, and he wouldn't start a squabble over it today.
"You not have family or friends coming over tomorrow?" he asked.
no subject
"No, I've got no one. I'm working noon to midnight to give some of the girls time with their families," he replied.
no subject
"Working on Christmas?" Danny replied. "Miserable, but kind of you, I suppose."
no subject
"Kind of me? Why's that?" he asked.
no subject
"...You just said it was so others could be with their families," Danny replied, giving Hex a puzzled look. "I do hope you're doing it for that reason and not because you feel socially obligated. Just because they have family doesn't mean they automatically deserve to be given the time off. You deserve it just as much, but if you want to give them the time, then that's different. That's just you being a generous soul."
no subject
"Oh, well...yeah. I've met Caro's babies and they deserve to have their mummy there on Christmas," he smiled. "And, really, most everyone I know are people I work with. I saw everyone else tonight, yeah? And it's always fun working Christmas. Lots of broken bones and power tool accidents," he said with a gleaming smile that was just a bit inappropriate.
no subject
"Doesn't sound very fun," Danny frowned. "What about the ones you don't save? The families who leave broken hearted, and never manage to enjoy the holidays again. That can't feel good."
no subject
"Danny, do you look for the worst?" Hex asked, his brow knitting. "You don't save everyone but I can promise if we lose then in July on on Christmas the holidays are forever ruined. That's how it is."
no subject
"It's not that I look for the worst, I just don't think I could find joy while surrounded by such sadness," Danny said honestly.
no subject
"We save more than we lose, Danny. And people need help. You never see people more weak than when they're afraid and hurting. It's a blessing to help the injured and sick."
no subject
"Maybe I'm just too sensitive for that sort of thing," Danny shrugged.
no subject
"It's not for everyone. Not A&E especially. More cut out for nursing day surgery or the peds ward, some nurses. I like it, though."
no subject
Danny hummed in understanding, slowing down when they reached Hex's.
"Sure you still want to invite me in?"
no subject
"Of course I want to invite you in. Don't be stupid," he teased and lead the way into the well appointed home. "Take your shoes off. Make yourself at home."
no subject
Danny took his shoes off, slightly embarrassed that one of his socks had a hole in it, then followed after Hex.
"Big home for one person. Don't you get lonely?" he asked.
no subject
"Not when I con mates into coming over," he grinned and winked at Danny quickly. He took the noms into the kitchen and put the kettle on.
"I got Fallout 4, do you want to play? Or we can just chat if you like. And you're more than welcome to stay the night. Guest bed or mine...I don't mind."
no subject
"Um, let's just chat," Danny suggested. "I'm not really a gamer."
no subject
"Alright," he smiled. "What are you going to do with your hundred quid?"
