The Queen's official birthday celebrations might wait for the better, brighter weather of June, instead of the actual date just passed, but there was no lack of things to do in London this week, even if it was cooler and damper than the week before. St. George's day festivities were scattered throughout the city, competing with celebrations of the four hundredth anniversary of Shakespeare's death. Getting around the city could be even more difficult than usual on Sunday, with multiple streets closed off for the London marathon.

There were exhibits - everything from graphic design to a survey of Sicilian history to the influence of underwear. And the same level of diversity could be found whether you were in the mood for music, theatre, good food, or late night fun. There was something for everyone, and no matter your plans - or lack of plans - you never quite knew what you were going to find, or who might find you.

Sunny for her part tried to hold still enough that the little bird could perch on her and tug on her earring in peace. So she turned her eyes more than her head towards Winter. "And how are you doing?"

Sitting up, Winter huffed a little sigh.

"Fine, I guess. ...Fin made me meet some men last night over dinner. He says I'm going to school in the fall. That I'll have to wear a uniform and learn things. ...It sounds dumb, and the men we ate with were old and stuffy. They smelled like money and mothballs."

"Well, if you're going to live in this world, school's probably a good idea," Sunny pointed out. If, of course. He could always choose to go back.

"I know. ...Doesn't mean I have to be excited though," he sulked.

"Oh, because you may have to follow a rule for once?" Sunny teased.

"I follow rules," Winter insisted, kicking the dirt with the toe of his shoe. "I'm a good pixie," he added quietly.

Sunny sighed and, taking advantage of a break in Philip's attention to her earring, turned her head and lightly stroked Winter's cheek with her finger. "I know you are. But you know what I mean. You're a willful pixie, too."

Winter pouted, but he also leaned into the touch, like a cat lapping up the affection.

"Maybe," he admitted with a little huff. "...Finlay says I have to have a tutor this summer, to learn to be among mortals and understand things better," he sighed, slumping against Sunny again, a bit more dramatically this time.

Philip, who didn't like when things weren't about him, gave Sunny's shiny-shiny a light tug, before fluttering over to Winter and pecking at his head. Half grooming the pixie- And half scolding him for not being more fun right now.

Almost automatically, Sunny put her arm around him, watching Philip preen his hair. "So what is it that's so tragic about it?"

"It sounds boring," Winter huffed. "...And what if it's too hard?"

"The only reason it'd be too hard for you is because you don't have the background knowledge the other students do," Sunny assured him, ignoring the boring part. "And that can be helped."

Winter frowned, then sighed.

"He said I would have to live there if I go," he said quietly. "Sunny, I don't want to live there. I like living with my family."

"Why do you have to live there?" Sunny asked simply, not yet indulging his unasked question to be comforted.

"Fin said that everyone boards there," Winter explained, sitting up a bit and causing Philip to move his perch.

The plump bird fluttered over to land on Sunny's book, watching the pair.

Sunny carefully ventured stroking Philip's tummy with her finger.

"Well," she said, "I think it might be good for you. You wanted a chance to prove you were grown, living away from family is a good opportunity for that."

Philip made a happy sound, nipping gently at Sunny's finger in appreciation.

"But... I just got them," Winter said quietly. "And Phouka couldn't come with me," he added, looking devastated by the thought of being separated from his best friend.

So Sunny kept up the petting.

"No, he couldn't," she said. And when she thought about it that right there had to be why Fin had chosen a boarding school. "But it doesn't mean you'd never see them again. Just probably on weekends."

"That's not enough. ...I want to just go to normal school," Winter sighed, Sinking low in his seat and deciding he didn't want to dwell on it any more.

A new song started playing through the pixie's headphones, and Philip started bobbing about again, alternating between getting scratches, and having a little dance.

"He likes you," Winter noted, nodding at the bird.

"He's sweet," she said, the words bubbling with a laugh she tried to swallow.

She wanted to make a comment that maybe he didn't want to grow up after all if she wasn't willing to do this, but that wasn't fair.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Yes," Winter nodded, cocking his head to the side as he often did when he was thinking. "I'm not as wise as you, so I may not have an answer, but I will try."

Sunny tried not to smile at the compliment, bit her lip in consideration. "I saw you running away from someone not too long ago. What happened?"

"Running?" Winter asked, looking confused- Then upset as he realized who Sunny must have seen him run from.

"I wasn't running. People only run when they've done something wrong. ...I didn't do anything wrong. I... I had a place to be," he lied quickly.

"Winter, you took off like a bat out of hell," Sunny answered with an arched eyebrow. "People don't do that unless the somewhere they've got to be is 'oh dear God, anywhere but here.'"

"Why would a bat be in hell?" Winter asked, looking confused, then shaking his head and sighing. "That was... It was Faizel, Master Aspid's student. I- I was worried he would be angry. That he would think I killed Aspid. ...But I didn't! I didn't, I swear it. I would never. I'm a good pixie, and pixies don't kill."

"Saying," Sunny explained, briefly and automatically. Though really, she'd have to think about it later.

"Is that really all it was?"
