Mini GP

It was that time of the year, a time that used to fill Valentine with joy. Christmas was so wonderful usually, after all, but not so much this year. He simply wasn't in the holiday spirit. However, he'd planned this charity event months ago, and there was no cancelling it now.

It wasn't as flash as ones he'd held in prior years, his museum open to the public with collection buckets all over for people to give what they could to ensure a better holiday for those in need. Music filled the space, and there were performers all throughout the space. Yes, he'd had to up security for the evening to keep his many occult related items safe, but- Well, it was worth it, he supposed. If nothing else, it seemed to be enough to stop his mother from worrying so much about him for a bit.

All were welcome and admission was free. The bar was reasonably priced, and there were a few free nibbles donated by a local restaurant. All and all, not a bad night for the bored and the generously inclined.

"Then I'll dance and you can watch," Fin teased, starting to tug him towards the bar. "But first, drinks."

"Yes, drinks," House agreed, because when his leg didn't hurt and he didn't have to worry about Vicodin, drinking like a fish was kind of fun.

"I was surprised when you invited me," he admitted when they got to the bar. "Not really my scene, is it?"

"A charity event at an occult museum isn't many people's 'scene'," Fin pointed out with a teasing smile, ordering two glasses of fizz and then turning his attention back to house. "Besides, I like any excuse to see you."

"Strangely enough I believe you," House said, and slid onto a stool. "You order."

Their drinks arrived swiftly, and Fin frowned slightly as he glanced over at the other man. "Why would it be so hard to believe?" he asked curiously.

House opened his mouth, then closed it again. "Nevermind," he said, then took a drink. "Well that's... fizzy."

"Not your favourite?" Fin asked with a smile. "That's alright, you can pick the next round. I just wanted a bit of bubbly. Makes me feel rich. It used to be something completely out of reach for me, I can't help but wanting to indulge at every given opportunity now."

"It's not that bad," House said with a quirk of his lips, and took another drink.

After a second he said, "I solved a case this morning." There was the slightest edge of excitement to his voice. Maybe a hint of pride, too.

"Oh?" Fin asked, his curiosity genuine rather than simply polite.

House leaned in a little. "The patient was being poisoned by his wife," he said. "With gold."

Fin looked baffled, sipping his drink as his brows knit together.

"That seems... Expensive, and hard. How did you work it out?"

"Gold sodium thiomalate," said House. "She was sprinkling it in his cornflakes."

Then he looked a bit smug as he said, "I was convinced it was heavy metal poisoning even though he tested negative for everything common. I lived in Egypt as a kid, fancied myself a treasure hunter. So I found my old chemistry set. Spread stannous chloride on my hands and then grabbed the wife's. Her hands turned purple... which is what happens when that chemical interacts with gold."

"So very clever," Fin smiled, clearly impressed. "I imagine the wife wasn't very impressed though."

He paused a beat then, grinning a bit. "You really wanted to be a treasure hunter?" he asked.

House chuckled. "Yeah," he said. "You know how I like solving mysteries."

"I always quite fancied that sort of thing myself," Fin admitted. "I wanted to be a deep sea diver, find ship wrecks and the like. It's why I started swimming. ...Could have been professional, but the heart condition- Well, not worth dwelling on that. ...What made you want to become a doctor instead?"

"I didn't know you were a swimmer," said House, and then realized that he didn't actually know that much about Fin at all.

It made him pause for a moment and then he said, "Well. You've earned a real story." He offered a little smile. Because he wasn't typically that truthful about things like this...

"I lived in Japan for a while, too." He drained the rest of the fizz. "My asshole of a father was in the military. Anyway, I was fourteen. A friend was in a rock climbing accident, really fucked him up. But the doctors around me were freaking out, they couldn't save him. And after arguing for a while... they brought in the janitor. He was a buraku, an untouchable. But also a physician and better than any of them. And as he saved my friend, they gave him respect that he didn't receive at any other time. Because in that moment it didn't matter who he was, what he was like - all that mattered was that he was the best."

"So that I could be whatever else I wanted to be, as long as I was also the best," House said.

"Aren't you just so terribly cool," Fin smiled, and though his tone was playful, it was clear he wasn't mocking at all. Greg was, in his opinion, quite cool.

"I guess I am," House said with a smirk. He waved to the bartender. "Bourbon for the next round."

Fin laughed, smiling brightly as he polished off his glass of fizz.

"After this, why don't we look around at the exhibits?" he suggested, bumping House's foot gently with his own.

"Sure," House said. "I guess I've become somewhat less of a skeptic since I met you."

"I've made you a believer, have I?" Fin teased, sitting up straighter when the next round arrived, and gently clinking his glass against House's.

"Well it's kind of hard not to when there's actual proof," House said. "You know, one of my underlings back in Princeton was convinced that aliens might be real during one of our cases. That did not have proof."
