It was that time of the year, a time that used to fill Valentine with joy. Christmas was so wonderful usually, after all, but not so much this year. He simply wasn't in the holiday spirit. However, he'd planned this charity event months ago, and there was no cancelling it now. 

It wasn't as flash as ones he'd held in prior years, his museum open to the public with collection buckets all over for people to give what they could to ensure a better holiday for those in need. Music filled the space, and there were performers all throughout the space. Yes, he'd had to up security for the evening to keep his many occult related items safe, but- Well, it was worth it, he supposed. If nothing else, it seemed to be enough to stop his mother from worrying so much about him for a bit.

All were welcome and admission was free. The bar was reasonably priced, and there were a few free nibbles donated by a local restaurant. All and all, not a bad night for the bored and the generously inclined.

"So very clever," Fin smiled, clearly impressed. "I imagine the wife wasn't very impressed though."

He paused a beat then, grinning a bit. "You really wanted to be a treasure hunter?" he asked.

House chuckled. "Yeah," he said. "You know how I like solving mysteries."

"I always quite fancied that sort of thing myself," Fin admitted. "I wanted to be a deep sea diver, find ship wrecks and the like. It's why I started swimming. ...Could have been professional, but the heart condition- Well, not worth dwelling on that. ...What made you want to become a doctor instead?"

"I didn't know you were a swimmer," said House, and then realized that he didn't actually know that much about Fin at all.

It made him pause for a moment and then he said, "Well. You've earned a real story." He offered a little smile. Because he wasn't typically that truthful about things like this...

"I lived in Japan for a while, too." He drained the rest of the fizz. "My asshole of a father was in the military. Anyway, I was fourteen. A friend was in a rock climbing accident, really fucked him up. But the doctors around me were freaking out, they couldn't save him. And after arguing for a while... they brought in the janitor. He was a buraku, an untouchable. But also a physician and better than any of them. And as he saved my friend, they gave him respect that he didn't receive at any other time. Because in that moment it didn't matter who he was, what he was like - all that mattered was that he was the best."

"So that I could be whatever else I wanted to be, as long as I was also the best," House said.

"Aren't you just so terribly cool," Fin smiled, and though his tone was playful, it was clear he wasn't mocking at all. Greg was, in his opinion, quite cool.

"I guess I am," House said with a smirk. He waved to the bartender. "Bourbon for the next round."

Fin laughed, smiling brightly as he polished off his glass of fizz.

"After this, why don't we look around at the exhibits?" he suggested, bumping House's foot gently with his own.

"Sure," House said. "I guess I've become somewhat less of a skeptic since I met you."

[prince_of_nymphs]

"I've made you a believer, have I?" Fin teased, sitting up straighter when the next round arrived, and gently clinking his glass against House's.

"Well it's kind of hard not to when there's actual proof," House said. "You know, one of my underlings back in Princeton was convinced that aliens might be real during one of our cases. That did not have proof."

[prince_of_nymphs]

"I wouldn't rule it out as a possibility just yet," Fin laughed, smiling. "You must miss them, your team," he noted.

[drfeelbad]

"Some of them," House said. "They were pretty competent for the most part." And they'd seemed to kind of like him, each in their own way, which was more than he could say for his current coworkers.

"What about here, in London? Are you getting on well with your new team?" he asked.

[drfeelbad]

House snorted. "Fin, I don't get along with most people."

[prince_of_nymphs]

"You get along with me though," Fin replied. "Not everyone does you know. I can be a bit much. Needy, chatty, twitchy..."

[drfeelbad]

"You are those things," House agreed, and knocked back a swallow of the bourbon. "I probably don't get the brunt of the neediness though. Besides, getting along with you is more a testament to you putting up with me."

[prince_of_nymphs]

"You get your share," he quipped playfully. "And you've not done anything to put me off, Greg. Not yet."

[drfeelbad]

"Give it time," said House. "I am masterful at pushing people away."

[prince_of_nymphs]

"A good match then, as I'm dreadfully stubborn," Fin purred.

[drfeelbad]

"It's true, if I decided to be an ass to you you'd probably insist on forgiving me or something," House said.

[prince_of_nymphs]

"I do make a habit of forgiving people who fuck me over. ...Quite literally, on occasion," Fin replied, his smile fading slightly.

House looked at him, mouth tightening a little. "I will not do that."

[prince_of_nymphs]

"That's... That's remarkable," he said honestly, "So you chose to be healer then- To be respected?"
