Solstice War - Gathering

The Solstice was upon them. When the sun went down the magic began to swell, the veil between this world and the Other Side thin as vapor. Mortals could sense it, even, though they may not have a name for it. They gathered together, not realizing the animal instinct of safety in numbers.

But all around the city, from the dark parts, fae began to come together as well. Unseelie filled the city- boggarts and Red Caps and things unseen for many a year with bright eyes and sharp teeth. But they were tricksy, dangerous and malicious but no worse than they ever were. The real threat, the ever present danger this year, were the Milesian that crawled out of the sewers and tube tunnels to prowl they city. They were hunting tonight. They had eyes black and soulless, eyes too wide for their white, gaunt faces. Larger than their eyes were their mouth. The smile of needle fangs glinted in the street lights. Long arms ending with spidery, spindly fingers reached and clawed at passers by from the shadows.

There was a war in the city tonight and the nature of the foe, the Milesian, meant no bound mortal needed to be near any battle. Death would come to one or the other if a killing blow came down.

But there was hope. Seelie fae prowled the city as well, fighting for Light and Air. Even the Queen had seen fit to step through with her sword and shield. Such was the threat to the Fae way of life that the Milesian presented.

The longest day of the year dawned but the sunlight did nothing to frighten off the dark forces. The longest day of the year simply meant the things that went bump in the night were attacking in the light.

(Tag in, tag around! Open all week so check back. Have fun with your adventures. If you don't want any Milesian, there are plenty of Unseelie, too. Day or night, whichever works for you.)

Fin remained silent at first, keeping his distance and swallowing hard.

"Why... Why do you look different?" he asked, voice shaky when he finally spoke. "Are you? Are you alive? Are you still you? Are you..."

He had so many questions, and they all tried to tumble out at once.

"You could... Kick it?" Winter suggested quietly. "Step on it? Put it in a sock?"

The creature had kept hopping away, its lantern bobbing back and forth as it went.

"A sock might work. Or a sack. I feel it would be an unmatched battle if I used my sword," he said, and each passing moment the foot got farther and farther away.

It was silly, Fin knew it was Will, could feel it, but- This face, this form, it didn't feel warm the way the last had. It didn't feel like his Will. He didn't feel drawn in the way he once had.

Finlay moved closer, but some distance remained.

"It's just a foot, maybe we should just let it be free. It's no threat," Winter insisted.

"I do not think we should just let it go..." the Phouka replied, but when he looked to where the little creature had been, it was gone. No trace if its scent on the wind, no sight of it's inviting little lantern.

The Phouka, for just a moment, looked terribly disappointed.

"Perhaps it is no threat after all."

The thing screamed at the loss of its arm, and like feral animals the cry summoned yet more of them, two more creatures skittering out of the darkness. Curnen was well aware that she wasn't much of a fighter. She never had been. And for all that the Milesian were spindly, they were still considerably larger than she was.

But crazy beat big every time.

Curnen's eyes went black and she hissed as she leapt upon one of them and began clawing at its eyes with her nails.

"I don't intend to use it at all," Fin insisted quietly. Will seemed to be taking this all so we'll, but Fin knew death, he'd been in its presence. He was finding it hard to just accept this for what it was.

And the face, he was having a pretty hard time with that too, honestly.

"Will I... Maybe we should get you looked at. ...Back home, I mean."

The Phouka's blade flashed and slashed, hacking away at the Milesian that appeared. His colour was high and his eyes bright with mad glee as he killed the one with only one arm, then whirled on the other.

"Beware the teeth!" he called in the middle of the fray.

"Weird," Winter said simply, glad they hadn't had to fight a lamp loving foot. ...That wasn't really his brand of whimsy.

Curnen only barely heard him, her world narrowing down to tearing the Milesian's face to ribbons. The words didn't entirely make sense until she saw that mouth full of shark teeth snapping at her fingers.

That brought her back to herself, a bit.

The nail was still in her pocket, and she whipped it out and scratched the Milesian across the throat making it roar in pain. It was barely a graze, but she may as well have delivered it a devastating blow.

She was aware, distantly, that this should be her reaction even holding the thing, but her skin wasn't irritated in the slightest.

"Agreed," he replied. "With that done, we should go home. We can lock ourselves away inside and let the Daoine Sidhe fight the war."

The battle was hard fought, but the Phouka managed to swing hard and take off the head of the Milesian before him. Then he had time to watch Curnen. The nail had scratched through the pale, thin skin and black smoke coiled up out of the wound. The creature shrieked in pain and fury and tried to shake her off. Phouka could see it had no hope. The vicious little faerie had very nearly finished him off.

Curnen grinned, showing too many teeth of her own and all of them gone pointed. She sang, low and cold,

Gold is for the mistress -- silver for the maid --
Copper for the craftsman cunning at his trade.
"Good!" cried the Baron, sitting in his hall,
"But iron, cold iron, is the master of them all."

The wound went from smoking to flame, and the creature thrashing under her dissolved into dust in moments.

The Phouka's eyes widened in surprise, but pride was what formed his smile.

"Ah!" he cried. "Victorious in battle! Very good, little bird, very good."

Squatting on all fours with her hair in a mess and her eyes and teeth gone inhuman, Curnen resembled more a wild animal than a girl. It felt so familiar that it hardly occurred to her that this was wrong.

But for all that, she grinned at the praise.

The Phouka had seen many a fae at the palace. One thing he truly missed from home was the variety of beauty the fae embodied. Humans were all so similar and ordinary.

In this moment Curnen was quite beautiful.

"Shall I see you to safety? Or would you like to join me in battle?" he asked.

The sun had not entirely dropped below the horizon in Dallas when Godric came awake, and more importantly, he was not alone. The figure that stepped out of the shadows, tendrils of the darkness trailing from him, was bloodied but, a sniff quickly assured Godric, uninjured himself. Usually hard to read, he either couldn't or didn't bother to hide the concern and urgency that had prompted his visit, and he skipped greetings entirely to explain why he was there.

A fae war could be devastating if the fighting was confined to the fae themselves, but so many in London at once, it would seem like a gourmet buffet to many of the vampires who lived there. Many would act for the good of the community, but those who lacked the restraint necessary... It would only take a few to trigger a massacre, and fae retaliation against all vampires.

"I thought, if you could be a liaison, contact whoever's in charge of your sort, we might save lives on both sides," Azri explained, as Godric blurred around his chamber getting dressed.

"Take me there. The sun will be up soon; we haven't much time. Somewhere we can talk. The one you need to speak with will come."

If Azri was curious how Godric could be so certain, he didn't ask. Either it would be made obvious soon enough, or he'd investigate for himself after the battle he'd been away from long enough already. If Godric was sure, that was enough for the moment, and shadows wrapped around them both like a cloak as he put an arm around Godric's shoulders. When the shadows pulled back, Godric's room was half a world away, and vampire and fae stood only the edge of one of London's many parks.

For the moment all seemed quiet, but the sounds of fighting and scent of faerie blood carried on the night wind. "Eric. Come to me."

It had been over seventy years since Godric had fought at Eric's side, but there was too much to be done, spread over too much of the city for them not to split up. Hearing a scream, Godric rushed around the corner and saw a human standing frozen, still screaming and pointing across the roundabout where someone fought off a handful of dark, twisted opponents.

The man was so busy screaming, he was unaware of the creature coming up behind him, jaw full of too many teeth opening wide. Before it could attack, Godric closed the distance between them, and ripped the creature's head off. Catching the human's gaze, he spoke softly, first getting him to stop screaming, then wiping the memory of what he'd seen. And finally, Godric commanded him to find shelter off the streets until it was safe.

Godric would've liked to see the man to safety, but Milesians were coming, drawn by the sound of prey or by their fallen brother. It was going to come to a fight, and there wasn't much night left before the dawn.

(Be the someone fighting Milesians, or come up in time to see Godric glamour the poor human, or whatever else works for you.)

Fin dragged himself to his feet with significantly more ease, lingering near but still not touching. Unease sat in his gut, weighing him down, leaving him much more cautious than usual.

"Pardon my ignorance and all that, but how do we get back from here?" he whispered, the words meant only for Will.

"But... You just said you wanted to fight, Phouka. We just..."

Wasn't Phouka's desire to fight the reason they were still out here? Wasn't it what they'd been talking about since they'd first encountered one another tonight?
