GP - Wild Magic 2: Chaotic Evil Boogaloo

London was a magic epicenter of sorts. Between doors to The Otherside, dormant and active portals, and an active wizarding community, it was a hub of energy, more so now than it had been for quite some time. The city was experiencing a magical renaissance of sorts- Which sounded lovely and made it a prime place to be for those exploring and studying magical energies, but wasn't so wonderful for London's more 'normal' sorts.

Magic didn't care if you were a dark lord or a banker, if it liked you, it liked you- And it was impossible to guess who it would like.

Today magic energy was at an all time high. Another blip in the usually somewhat steady stream of power that flowed through the streets. As a result, odd things were afoot- From mischievous inconveniences, to darker disruptions. Unlike the portals, these bothers were a touch more subtle, creeping up unseen on the unsuspecting.

Last time around the magic had seemed lighthearted and playful- And some of it still was, but... There was an intensity to some of it this time, harking back to the troubles that seemed to roll around every Halloween now. Something wicked was caught in the current, and while it wasn't out to harm everyone, it did seem keen to target a few.

(OTA. Just like the last time, the magic can affect your pup however you see fit. Unlike last time, however, some of the magic has taken a darker turn. It doesn't have to do something wicked to your pup, of course, but the option is there now. This post will be open from 7/18-7/28 or longer if needed. Tag in, tag others, and check back often.)

It wasn't impossible, but... "But that wasn't Aspid any more than it was Brushy," Curnen murmured.

Curnen blinked slowly at that. The Greek gods had little relevance to her existence, but she'd read that big, orange D'Aulaires book. "Well shit. Reckon saying no would be rude of me."

"Something to keep you busy while you look for your friend, then," Curnen said, instead of anything about money, which would be her immediate concern in his place.

"When the fae zombies happened, I thought that was the end game," Felix mused, stilling his hand. "We had been planning for an incursion, though not as thoroughly as I would have liked. The Virtu held the wards and, as far as I know, no permanent damage was done. But the... the pattern didn't release." He didn't know how else to say it, but he thought Sunny would understand.

"How often do you talk to Remus? Do you know much of what he calls 'wizarding London'?"

"You could say I'm an extremely theoretical scientist," Felix agreed, content to use words that an annemer, albeit a very intelligent one, could understand. "You might have heard about the researchers in China who have been working to teleport information on photons from Earth to space. I'm studying something similar, regarding the transferral of energy through and between different configurations of matter."

Sunny knew exactly what he meant, and she had the same thing in mind. The question became then, what pattern was being worked here? Was someone trying to do something on the level of summoning Ekewnsu?

"I haven't talked to Remus since Christmas. I almost punched out his best friend, and I think we're all just not talking about it. But I know what he means."

"What's the going rate of pay for large quantities of human annoyance? Is it more or less than selective, manipulative individual telepathy?" Felix sliced off each word with a razor-sharp tongue.

Finally frustrated to a terminal degree by the noise, the wizard touched a fingertip to the charging port of the tablet, and summoned his magic. It was a short but immediate effect, draining enough of the stored electricity in the battery to shut the device off entirely.

Fin said nothing, he only pretended to pout a little, clearly hoping for kinder words than that. He couldn't help himself, even with that violently lusty magic under control thanks to the tattoo on his back, he still craved attention. He still wanted to be desired.

Spencer could only assume that the play on words meant Felix was maybe more of an autodidact sort of scientist, something he could respect given how independent most of his own education had been.

"That is a very deep hole of exceptionally complex quantum mechanics to be musing over during a picnic," he pointed out, though the slight smile that came to rest on his lips made it clear he approved.

"Or a new job. Whichever comes first, I suppose," Spencer replied with a sheepish smile, thankful that she hadn't asked about how he'd managed to lose his job in the first place.

"I haven't been to London in a long time, maybe I'll finally visit some tourist spots. Last time I was here it was to give a lecture, and the time before that it was a conference. I don't think I've ever really had the chance to just enjoy the city. ...You know after the fall of the Roman's rule in the fifth century, London, or Londinium as it was known then, was essentially abandoned. Can you imagine? I know it wasn't as impressive or as great as it is now, but... It's kind of amazing to think that the capital was basically left to rot for a while."

"I know, but he could be pulling the strings," the pixie insisted, though there wasn't much conviction in his words. "...Curnen, it's getting worse, isn't it? It's not just me, not just my head whispering sour things, right? There's something bad flowing through the city. Something sinister is coming for us all."

"A simple 'no' would not have been the rudest thing hurled my way today, petal. I spent the better part of my morning in Tesco," the titan answered, wrinkling his nose at the memory.

Curnen put her arms around him and pulled him close. Winter was much taller than her now and pulling his head to her shoulder would be awkward, but she could rub his back.

"... Yes," she whispered.

All the same, she figured it would do more good than harm to say yes. "Lead on, then," Curnen answered with an awkward little one-shouldered shrug.

Felix paused in his intellectual process for a particularly chewy bit of gossip. His right brow arched directly up in a perfect arc. He had to practice some dedicated brow maintenance to get them to shape that way. "Sirius? Whatever did he do? And shall I offer to take him over my knee on your behalf?"

"But far more engaging than celebrity gossip," Felix pointed out, fairly certain that Spencer would agree with him. "If I'm not exercising my mind, then I'm letting it rot, don't you think?"

He shifted position, since being exceedingly tall and gangly made it somewhat difficult to get comfortable on the ground. The move revealed the title of the book that had drawn Spencer's attention. It was in Latin, and translated simply to Travels.

"It must be agony being so far away from them," Crowley said. It was seemingly a soft statement but there was something simply devilish about how he said it.

"Individual? Individual? You shut your filthy mouth. I would on the broad spectrum, lad. This little manifestation has brought chaos to billions. Not bad for one day's work, I should say," he replied Proudly.

"I'll teach you. We should really have lunch once a week and compare notes. We could do it at my flat where no one can see," she said thoughtfully, then dove into her burger.

Where Curnen had come from, you didn't ask about why a man was out of work. Mostly because you didn't have to, it was practically a fact of life. Like any other fading rural town, most Tufa who weren't farming either had to work outside the county because Needsville couldn't provide employment for that many people or they were just shit out of luck. Her impulse was to worry about money.

"We raise and raze our city like the strangest house of cards..." It was a line from a S. J. Tucker song. Curnen smiled and shook her head at herself. "Don't mind me. But yeah, London's a tough old bitch. It's been anything but boring getting to know her."
wispofathing: (Holding Back)

[personal profile] wispofathing 2017-07-23 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Curnen thought about that, the smile fading as her expression smoothed out. "Well, I miss them, yeah. But it ain't time for me to go back yet."

Remembering the encounter with the idiot in the leather suit, Sunny almost sneered. "Couldn't take obvious discomfort with the harassment he calls flirting as a sign to back the hell off. When I called him out for being a rich idiot fuckboy, his 'apology' was mostly sulk." She shrugged. "Remus assured me before I met him that he just takes getting used to, but I am not getting used to that for anybody."

"Yeah? Alright," Fin agreed, staring at his burger and searching for the will to consume it. He was starving, but the act of eating was just- Unpleasent somehow at the moment.

Winter embraced her without hesitation, holding on tight and ducking his head to press a kiss to the top of hers.

"I wish I wasn't afraid," he admitted quietly, pausing, then looking apologetic. "I didn't mean to say the w-word. I never know who I can say it to without making trouble, but it always slips out anyways... You know what I mean though. I'd be happy to be brave in the face of all this magical trouble."

Spencer smiled at that and nodded in agreement. "Have you been to The National Gallery yet? That's near the top of my list, right after seeing the tower. ...I'm kind of hoping I'm here for Halloween as well, there's this place called London Dungeon, and apparently their Halloween season is amazing."

He realised he was about to start rambling again, and bit his tongue to stop himself.

"...I like Halloween a lot," he said instead.
