Sunny didn't have time to warn him before the ground shifted beneath Spencer's feet to pitch him into the room, before magic crawled up his limbs to hold him down by the dead children. The knife in Otokoto's left hand made small but decisive twists as he muttered in a language Sunny didn't have time to recognize.
"Children make the best sacrifices," Black Hat lamented. "But you've still something of innocence about you. You'll do."
He directed his next commands to what must have seemed like the air, but it shifted and pulsed like no natural wind. Bush spirits, Sunny recognized. Or remembered. She couldn't quite tell which. "Go now. Watch for real threats. The girl is harmless."
Not so. Not anymore.
Enraged, Sunny slashed her knife through the air shouting at the top of her lungs in a voice that was not entirely her own. "Hold." She held the little green blade high, eyes full of determination and tears as Black Hat's own shirt collar began violently choking him.

"Spencer," she murmured. "Run."
