There was something about handling an ancient text, Vanessa sometimes reflected, that was almost like what she imagined touching a lover would be. Not just a man there for the night, a name she would never learn, a face she would seldom remember, but a lover, the sort one was supposed to have. Someone to share things with. Someone to laugh with, cry with, live with.
It was in the way she handled the ancient tome: with care, respect, and love.
She pulled her gloves off after putting it safely away, and turned around to find herself face to face with someone she had not heard walk in.
"You're a quiet one," she congratulated the intruder, sharp eyes taking in everything they could about them.
