Date: 2015-12-29 02:50 am (UTC)"I should have never gone to them for help. It's like I delivered you to them in gift wrap," he said, an awful, sick feeling sinking in his gut. "Maybe...Maybe we could run. You could run. I could take you to Liverpool. Me nan's house is still in me name. It's stuffy but we could set you up there. Get you out of London and away from all this..."

Date: 2015-12-29 02:59 am (UTC)Danny was silent for a long moment, then wet his lips.
"My best friend growing up, he had this cat. Vicious thing, hated everything and everyone. When he used to bite though, he always told me not to pull away. Because that's what prey does. It pulls away, it tries to run. ...You know what you do when you want a cat to stop biting, Hex? You push. You push your hand into their mouth, and they let go. You stop being prey."

Date: 2015-12-29 03:04 am (UTC)"Danny, I'm all for standing up and fighting the good fight but I'm nit sure you know who you're up against. MI6 isn't a bloody cat. They've killed your boyfriend, framed you for the murder, given you HIV, lost you your job, discredited you to the public...I think your hand is already deep in their mouth and they're chewing it off, mate," he replied, trying to be reasonable.

Date: 2015-12-29 03:11 am (UTC)"That's fine," Danny replied calmly. "I've got two of them."

Date: 2015-12-29 03:30 am (UTC)"Danny," he sighed with concern and shook his head. "I...don't know how to help you, mate. But I hate to think of you going this alone."
no subject
Date: 2015-12-29 03:39 am (UTC)"I'm not going to be alone tonight," Danny said quietly. "That's something, isn't it?"
no subject
Date: 2015-12-29 03:48 am (UTC)"That is something," he smiled and moved in to slip his arm round Danny's waist to lead him on. Their bags swung in time with their steps and before they left the neighborhood of the museum there was a small petrol station.
"We should get some rubbish. Crisps and candy and some cigarettes for you. I want a drink," he said, leading the way inside out of the cold.
"Merry Christmas," came flatly out of the bored looking girl behind the counter. She snapped her gum and turned the pages of a pap rag, waiting for the pair to hurry and leave again.

Date: 2015-12-29 02:43 pm (UTC)Danny grabbed a little bag of Wotsits, pulling out his wallet to see if he had enough- Then frowned when he found a hundred pound note.
"Did you give me this?" he asked Hex, holding the bill up in show.

Date: 2015-12-29 07:43 pm (UTC)"No, not me...but I got one too. They were slipping them pockets at the party," Hex smiled. "I told you...Willy and Fin are bloody generous. Probably hired a pickpocket off the street to do it."
no subject
Date: 2015-12-29 08:27 pm (UTC)"And loaded, apparently," Danny replied, still staring at the bill- Then putting the crisps back. He wouldn't waste his money on chips. A hundred quid was groceries for the whole flat for a week or two.

Date: 2015-12-29 09:26 pm (UTC)Hex picked them back up and added them to his pile and paid without fuss.
"Let's get in and get some tea before we freeze," he said.

Date: 2015-12-29 09:53 pm (UTC)Danny frowned, wishing Hex would stop paying his way. It was Christmas Eve though, and he wouldn't start a squabble over it today.
"You not have family or friends coming over tomorrow?" he asked.
no subject
Date: 2015-12-29 10:02 pm (UTC)"No, I've got no one. I'm working noon to midnight to give some of the girls time with their families," he replied.
no subject
Date: 2015-12-29 10:04 pm (UTC)"Working on Christmas?" Danny replied. "Miserable, but kind of you, I suppose."
no subject
Date: 2015-12-29 10:11 pm (UTC)"Kind of me? Why's that?" he asked.
no subject
Date: 2015-12-29 10:32 pm (UTC)"...You just said it was so others could be with their families," Danny replied, giving Hex a puzzled look. "I do hope you're doing it for that reason and not because you feel socially obligated. Just because they have family doesn't mean they automatically deserve to be given the time off. You deserve it just as much, but if you want to give them the time, then that's different. That's just you being a generous soul."

Date: 2015-12-29 11:16 pm (UTC)"Oh, well...yeah. I've met Caro's babies and they deserve to have their mummy there on Christmas," he smiled. "And, really, most everyone I know are people I work with. I saw everyone else tonight, yeah? And it's always fun working Christmas. Lots of broken bones and power tool accidents," he said with a gleaming smile that was just a bit inappropriate.
no subject
Date: 2015-12-29 11:39 pm (UTC)"Doesn't sound very fun," Danny frowned. "What about the ones you don't save? The families who leave broken hearted, and never manage to enjoy the holidays again. That can't feel good."
no subject
Date: 2015-12-29 11:47 pm (UTC)"Danny, do you look for the worst?" Hex asked, his brow knitting. "You don't save everyone but I can promise if we lose then in July on on Christmas the holidays are forever ruined. That's how it is."
no subject
Date: 2015-12-30 12:08 am (UTC)"It's not that I look for the worst, I just don't think I could find joy while surrounded by such sadness," Danny said honestly.
no subject
Date: 2015-12-30 12:14 am (UTC)"We save more than we lose, Danny. And people need help. You never see people more weak than when they're afraid and hurting. It's a blessing to help the injured and sick."
no subject
Date: 2015-12-30 12:23 am (UTC)"Maybe I'm just too sensitive for that sort of thing," Danny shrugged.
no subject
Date: 2015-12-30 12:42 am (UTC)"It's not for everyone. Not A&E especially. More cut out for nursing day surgery or the peds ward, some nurses. I like it, though."
no subject
Date: 2015-12-30 12:50 am (UTC)Danny hummed in understanding, slowing down when they reached Hex's.
"Sure you still want to invite me in?"
no subject
Date: 2015-12-30 01:27 am (UTC)"Of course I want to invite you in. Don't be stupid," he teased and lead the way into the well appointed home. "Take your shoes off. Make yourself at home."
