London was a magic epicenter of sorts. Between doors to The Otherside, dormant and active portals, and an active wizarding community, it was a hub of energy, more so now than it had been for quite some time. The city was experiencing a magical renaissance of sorts- Which sounded lovely and made it a prime place to be for those exploring and studying magical energies, but wasn't so wonderful for London's more 'normal' sorts.

Magic didn't care if you were a dark lord or a banker, if it liked you, it liked you- And it was impossible to guess who it would like.

Today magic energy was at an all time high. Another blip in the usually somewhat steady stream of power that flowed through the streets. As a result, odd things were afoot- From mischievous inconveniences, to darker disruptions. Unlike the portals, these bothers were a touch more subtle, creeping up unseen on the unsuspecting.

Last time around the magic had seemed lighthearted and playful- And some of it still was, but... There was an intensity to some of it this time, harking back to the troubles that seemed to roll around every Halloween now. Something wicked was caught in the current, and while it wasn't out to harm everyone, it did seem keen to target a few.

(OTA. Just like the last time, the magic can affect your pup however you see fit. Unlike last time, however, some of the magic has taken a darker turn. It doesn't have to do something wicked to your pup, of course, but the option is there now. This post will be open from 7/18-7/28 or longer if needed. Tag in, tag others, and check back often.)

Curnen only continued giggling, responding to the smoke by covering her nose and mouth with her hands as though trying to smother her amusement. This wasn't a new irritation, a lot of people smoked back home.

"You laugh, little bird, but don't think I'm fooled. You're no Good. I can smell your Sins from over here. Murder has a stench like none other," he said quietly enough that the people around them couldn't hear.

That stopped her.

Curnen frowned and lowered her hands. "I ain't murdered anybody."

"Then why do you seem to feel so responsible, pet?" he asked with oily concern.

Curnen turned that false concern aside with an answering question. "Why do you think I'd answer that?"

"Are we playing Questions now?" he asked back.

"Could be," Curnen said with a shrug. "I know what my sins are. Either you know 'em, too, or they ain't your business. And given I didn't kill anybody, I'm leaning toward the latter."

"You're terrible at the game of Questions," Crowley tsked. "But to satisfy your curiosity, I'm not psychic. I can't read your mind. But I do know how to read a heart. Yours doesn't beat quite right."

"That a fact?" Curnen asked. It wasn't a yes or a no, though she knew her heart didn't beat quite right. It was broken and bruised, anybody could hear that in her music if they were really listening.

"No, no, no. You've already lost the game. You can't start asking Questions again," he scolded, most definitely not answering what she'd asked.

Curnen shrugged. "Okay." She turned her attention back to her phone, though notably, not Facebook.

Crowley opened his phone and the leader of a foreign country began to meander his way through a speech, winding and meandering his way through a word salad that was troubling and annoying all at once. People around Crowley groaned and told him to shut it off.

He let it play.

When it ended he looked at Curnen again.

"That's all your fault, you know," he said. "I bet you didn't even vote."

Anything about that asshole was always a loaded matter, and Curnen was in an interesting position where while she hadn't supported him... she understood. Appalachia was poor. Fucking poor. And left behind and angry and scared. When someone promised to bring jobs back to their fading towns, was it really a wonder which way they'd go?

She wasn't getting into that.

"Momma always raised me not to talk about politics or religion with strangers."

Curnen grinned at him. "I think we've been doing all right so far."

Crowley arched a brow. "Shall we talk, then, of all your failings in the world some more"

"I think you'll figure something out," Curnen assured him cheekily.

"I'm sure I will, pet," he said. There was a soft swirl of wind around them, a breeze charged with magic. To Crowley it felt menacing and he looked around to see what mischief might be afoot. A car came to a dead stop on the street and was immediately rear ended. Crowley chuckled softly until he saw the door open and only vapor escape from the driver's seat.

"We should go inside, I think," he said, quite calmly for someone who felt the maliciousness in the air around them.

For a Tufa, feeling not just indifference but outright malice in the wind was downright terrifying and Curnen went white even before she registered anything about the crash.

"That... might be a good idea," she murmured in agreement.

Crowley rose and when Curnen was on her feet he laid a hand on her back to hurry her inside. There was no guarantee it would be safer inside the cafe, but it couldn't hurt.

Once inside he looked out through the window.

"We'll sit in the back, I think."

For what an arse he'd been just moments before, he was remarkably courteous and protective now. He had great fun messing people about, but that was his doing. He was rather concerned about threats that didn't come from the likes of himself.

Too stunned to object, Curnen let him do it and accepted being guided inside like a kid. She nodded her agreement and started to move toward the back at the suggestion. "What the fuck was that?"

"A dark magic," Crowley said, as if it was obvious. "It's been bubbling up all day. I'd blame your kind, but I don't think that's it. It feels...older."

"I can tell that," Curnen said, though she was still a little shaky for eye rolling. She waited until they were settled at a table toward the back before she added, "But I dunno what kind of magic it is."

"Something old," Crowley said softly. "Something very old. Perhaps from before the creation. The magic of darkness and chaos."

That was a chilling thought, and Curnen sat stunned at the very idea. "Well, fuck."
